…You’ve got a tiger in your tank!
Now, just added to the world’s LARGEST collection of WQXI airchecks, this fabulous 30 minutes scoped recording of Tony ‘the tiger’ on Quicksie in Dixie and those wonderful PAMS jingles! This comes to us from our friend Matt Seinberg, a trusted source of classics!
It’s April Fools’ Day and Taylor says someone’s playing a trick since he can’t get the Beatles in for an encore performance… actually the record seems to not wanna play at the start of this aircheck but he gets it working with a perfect talkup. You’ll hear plenty of classic commercials and Taylor’s top 5 countdown.
Audio quality is quite good, it’s the reception that has a bit of noise on it, as it sounds like WQXI was received near a noisy power line… all in all very good sound however. This apparently came to us encoded right off the original source reel (credited to Ira Menaker…thank you.).

I just wanted to let everyone know that this recording of WQXI-1965-Tony Taylor is actually from April 1, 1983! In the early 80’s, QXI would recreate a year from the past on April 1 (ie, in 1982, they did 1967,in 1981 they did 1966) with music,jingles of the era.On this one,they brought back Tony Taylor for one morning. This recording has the 1983 stuff edited out, including the disclaimer from Fleetwood Gruver,the PD of QXI before Tony began.

I have to admit… had no idea whatsoever that they did that. Our contributor never mentioned that fact either. What a great April Fools joke! But more amazing is how authentic they made it sound. Thanks, Carl, for bringing that to our attention!
Due to political correctness, the Corn Flakes spot wouldn’t play today, although I found nothing wrong, as it wasn’t meant as a racial slur, and I liked the station ID at 3:13. Also liked “Quicksie in Dixie” branding.
I recently connected with Tony – who is alive and well – to ask him how this re-creation was produced. He responded that:
Producing that recreation has easy because the production director at QXI had saved the air checks of the time for the commercials and I had a New York Times book that was a reprint of the first 2 pages of every day of the 60’s. Music was easy because we had the old playlists and the rest of the show was ad-libbed from memory. Those were great days.
Where is Tony, back in Atlanta? We miss him back in Palm Coast and our Wednesday men’s golf league.
