1400 WLLH Lowell and Lawrence “Live at 5” | May 22, 1992

Here’s another from contributor David Boucher highlighting some of Boston’s suburban radio stations. WLLH has a history going back to the 1940s, as one of America’s first synchronous AM stations, with synchronized transmitters in both Lowell and Lawrence, Massachusetts. There’s more information on that online, so we won’t get into the technical aspects.

Featured on this tape is WLLH’s news block that aired at 5pm daily. Called “Live at Five”, it was anchored by Randy Burkman and a female whose name I couldn’t make out.

This was recorded on Radio Shack “Concertape 30” which only held 15 minutes on each side. I guess there was a call for that back when these were sold at retail outlets. The tape held up well, as there don’t seem to be any dropouts. Tape hiss is at a minimum. The recording is somewhat lacking in dynamic range, but this IS an AM station and we’re limited to 9khz bandwidth. Apart from this description, there’s nothing more to write except there are some notable stories in the news, including the Rodney King beating trial. This will be interesting to history buffs.

Randy Burkman today is heard as a staff announcer at Salem Christian preaching/teaching station WFIF Milford, CT.
