Comments:

Contributor Daniel Coulombe submitted this 8:45 scope of KC-101 as an unscoped 30 minute tape which we’ve been holding on to for a few years now. We know nothing about the jock, “Big” Rich Baker, but he comes across as pretty laid back. In fact, this recording shows a KC101 that seems more like an Adult Contemporary station than CHR. We’ll chalk that up to the year in music 1981, which was very soft rock oriented at nearly all the major stations. In our opinion, perhaps so much so that it helped put the whammy on AM Top 40 as a format, since there was little to be excited about.

We can’t nail down an exact date. There are others who probably can get close. Be sure to leave your comments below.

  1. Sounds like this was a Wednesday in early-mid September.

  2. Judging from the car ad saying it was the end of the 1981 year and the reference to kids going back to college I would say this was at the end of August 1981. I was going to college as a Sophomore back then in Springfield, MA and KC-101 was one of several stations that was often blasting from speakers in the dorm rooms. In fact I may even have been on the road going back to college from Long Island when this aired.

As for the music, I had forgotten how smooth the early 80’s were. Listening to this aircheck took me back briefly to a happier time. I am sorry we cannot hear the unscoped version but I suppose I could use my vast collection of MP3’s to put it back together (sort of).

  3. B-101 in Providence used the same jingles. Even John Bina sounds good.
