610 AM Miam, WIOD

Alex Bennett – WIOD Miami | 1989

Alex Bennett is called by “Super” Dave, recording for “California Aircheck”, “the latest national aircheck service’ for the publication “Radio and Records”. Remember when R&R was a MUST READ for jocks in the studio?

These guys talk about the state of Radio in 1989 and name drop guys like Johnny Dark, Scott Shannon, etc. If you were in radio or knew radio insiders back then, you’d be real interested in this broadcast which killed about 9 minutes of coveted prime airtime on 610 AM this particular day, 1989.

Nice clip. Good to hear Glen Hill again. Glad that “Super Dave” had the audio.

This is from the days before WIOD was taken over by Clear Channel and turned into a right-wing mouthpiece. WIOD had a strong reputation as a news leader, good entertainment talk, and because of that had a strong listenership. When Randi Rhodes, Rick and Suds, and Neil Rogers were there, you couldn’t touch it. Too bad Clear Channel destroyed the station.

This was when Alex Bennett filled in for Neil Rogers before his big fail on afternoons. This is why you hear the Bird on the show.

Correction: Super Dave was recording for East Coast Airchecks not California Airchecks-he references it 16 seconds into the aircheck.
