Big Ron O’Brien, 98.1 WOGL Philadelphia | April 24, 2006

98.1 FM Philadelphia, WOGL, Oldies, WCAU-FM

Big Apple Airchecks Matt Seinberg CraigBig Ron O’Brien (October 24, 1951 – April 27, 2008) was well known for his talent, quick wit and warm personality. He is fondly remembered by friends and listeners alike.

Recorded just over two years before his passing, here’s Big Ron in a new, scoped aircheck highlighting the voice that listeners became familiar with over the six year period O’Brien was on the air at WOGL.

As was his way, Ron O’Brien was upbeat and so easy to listen to. Here he’s playing the best of the 60s and 70s – the Oldies format that so many loved at WOGL and elsewhere, before the format was mostly retired in favor of 70s/80s music.

In addition to WOGL, Big Ron O’Brien was on the air all over the United States. He started his career at KUDL Kansas City in 1969. After that, such stations as WCAR Detroit, WCFL Chicago, WQXI Atlanta, WFIL, WYXR Philadelphia, both KFI and KIIS-FM Los Angeles, WNBC & WXLO New York, KZDG Denver and WRKO Boston.

This is by far an incomplete work, as there’s probably nothing we could say here that can completely pay tribute to Big Ron, but hopefully in some small way, we can post this and hope that generations who remember him will still smile when they hear Big Ron O’Brien on 98.1 WOGL.

I can’t tell you how many times I had the opportunity to aircheck Big Ron here in Atlanta at WQXI and failed to do so, or how many airchecks I did do of others and just flat out LOST. I have a sign on my rump that says KICK ME….any takers other than myself ???

Thanks for posting this. Remembering Big Ron from his days at “Super ‘CFL,” just a really sweet memory. The man’s personality just made me feel at ease. A little crazy, but just crazy enough to be real.

Big Ron, you are remembered, AND very much missed by many!!!
