Today’s Hip Hop behemoth in New York City, Hot 97, began life a a little Latin dance station at 103.5FM. Top 40 WAPP 103.5 The Apple, dropped it’s floundering format, and became WQHT Hot 103, August 13, 1986.
WQHT became the go-to radio station for Latin Freestyle Dance, upbeat R&B & Pop, hot music mixes, and energetic Top 40 radio DJ’s. Two of the most most popular jocks at Hot 103 are featured on this aircheck, “Broadway” Bill Lee, & “Fast” Freddie Colon. Bill started in radio in 1972, & worked on air for WTIC-FM Hartford, KFRC San Francisco, WLOL Minneapolis, and KPKE in Denver, before bringing huis rhyming style to afternoon drive at Hot103. Freddie Colon spent 5 years on air at 92KTU before joining WQHT. Hot 103 was around for two years before moving down the dial to 97.1. The format ran until 1994, when WQHT Hot97 moved in a Hip Hop direction.

Now, a message from our founder…
Do you think you could spare a moment? survives, literally, on the donations from people just like you. The ads you see take about 3 months to build up enough revenue just to get a small check. If you enjoy these archives, which so many out there do indeed rely upon, could you spare a little bit of cash? All of it goes to the hosting fees and miscellaneous costs of running this website. Thank you in advance.
