WIFI 92 was a pioneering radio station in Philadelphia. Launching in 1958, WIFI initially offered a Middle of the Road (MOR) format, catering to a broad audience. By the early 1970s, the station transitioned to a live FM Top 40 format known as the “Boogie Format,” featuring high-energy contemporary hits and personalities like Hy Lit, Wild Bill Elliot, Bill Gamble, John Rivers, Liz Kiley, Byron & Tanaka, and Steve “Shotgun” Kelly. This shift made WIFI one of the first stand-alone, live FM Top 40 stations in the United States, setting it apart from AM counterparts and establishing it as a dominant force in Philadelphia radio.
The station lasted until early 1983 when it flipped format to new rock i92. The new format only lasted for 6 months until flipping to Urban formatted WXTU, which also only lasted 6 months. By March 1984, the format went to country, which it still is today.
