This excellent quality recording comes to us from Big Apple Airchecks. Matt sent this along with a few dozen other radio classics several years ago, and considering the large backlog of radio exhibits I have to process, it seemed logical to begin here.

This particular aircheck was preserved quite well. Originally recorded onto a reel, SOMEONE (presumably, whomever traded it to Big Apple Airchecks) digitized this quite a few years ago. Matt simply sent us the master mp3 file. The audio quality is so good, all that was required by airchexx was to telescope it down (removing the ‘music’ to comply with U.S. Copyright law and it’s “fair use” rules for ‘incidental music’. One day, I really must clarify our official Airchexx policy regarding copyright compliance.) for exhibit.

KKDJ was a Rock & Top 40 pop music station licensed to Los Angeles. At the time of this recording, Charlie Tuna was the Program Director and Morning Drive host. Tuna was responsible and oversaw the station’s branding and Call Letter change to KIIS (Kiss-FM) along with the beginning of a decade long simulcast with AM 1150 in 1975. Like you probably are, I was struck by just how genuinely funny Tuna was… spontaneous humor like one does on live morning drive radio isn’t something that you can write down and script for… often, it just comes naturally as it shows here on Tuna’s morning show.

You’ll REALLY enjoy this, even without the original music. Please, be sure to share with friends!
