Chris Edwards, WDEN (AM) Macon GA | 1970

This is the Grady Spires show, and filling in here is Chris Edwards. We don’t know much about radio in Macon, GA, much less WDEN AM and FM. But it’s obvious that someone went to a great deal of trouble in making a professional scope of this Country music station. We’re guessing the year on this to be 1970, although fans of Classic Country could probably pinpoint this down via the hit songs played.

Jingles are used frequently, although we can’t identify what company they are from. Most interesting is the network affiliation with “Information Radio News”. Apparently this was one of the services of American Information Radio. My first guess without asking the powers that be would be to think this might have been the forrunner of what is now IRNUSA Radio – but I believe this was a separate entity that obviously went out of business or was gobbled up by a larger network at least 3 decades ago. This network has been gone for long enough a period of time that we can’t even dig up any information on the web – and these days, that’s a big deal. Perhaps somebody knows.

Jeff Roteman’s ABC News Tribute site gives an overview of how the main ABC Network was split into 4 separate and demo specific networks in late 1960’s. Here’s a link: //abcnews.andmuchmore.com/

Grady Spires was my grandfather. To my everlasting regret, he died in 2002. If anyone has any information on old recordings, I would greatly appreciate it.

This must have been from the old studios at 127 First Street. I hung around there quite a bit during high school…a couple of nights in the studio with Grady, too. I remember all those jingles.
