Christopher Allen, 990 WTIG “Country 99” Massillon OH | December 2, 1988

Another Akron/Canton market area AM station that was still playing music in 1988 – WTIG was known as “Country 99”, and was a full-service Country station serving the local community with live jocks and the standard Country music fare, including syndicated programming… If the Top 40 world had “American Top 40” featuring Casey Casem, the Country world had “The Weekly Country Music Countdown”, featuring Chris Charles. Ironically, “The Weekly Country Music Countdown” was written by Casey Casem and marketed by Watermark, Inc., same folks who distributed AT40. It was a class act. Chris Charles preceeded Lon Helton’s countdown by at least 10 years, if not more.

The jock here sounds pretty young. He goes by the name Christopher Allen. We have no way of knowing if Mr. Allen is his real or a stage name, but I’d bet on the latter – knowing that even I had one (which my friends from High School made fun of me for) at my hometown radio station.

WTIG today is “Sports 990” – an ESPN affiliate. Their current website is HERE.

The forecast at the beginning of the aircheck is delivered by longtime news director Steve Luke. He later served as morning news anchor for many years at WHBC/1480 in Canton.
