Re-branding is a fact of radio, and it's a fact that most traditional Oldies stations have had to move away from 60s and early 70s music as the audience ages out. Simple fact is, most of the audience who remembers the 1960s music is now dead or no longer listening to radio of any kind - and over 65 aren't necessarily web-savvy. So it is that I decided to take HitOldies.net in a different direction. We're skewing newer.

Now, before Oldies fans start panicking, I'm not going THAT much newer. It's more of a tweak than a major format change. However, some things will improve upon what we had before.

Here's what HitOldies is going to be once the change is complete:

The music is centered around the year 1984, goes back and forward 10 years either side. So, yes. We are playing the 1990s. The music is a more adult contemporary blend. No hard rock, no rap. Otherwise, the format is very close to CHR.

Weekday shows. Steve Garren returns from a well deserved break with a new show 6-10am. It's called "Steve Garren's Morning Blend". His show, his idea and the name stuck. 10am - 2pm a new personality joins HitOldies. Please join me in welcoming Rhonda Blake to the family. Rhonda has been working in the south for a long time and she sounds great on the radio. Rounding out the daytime lineup, Rockin' Richie Norris returns to do 2-6pm daily.

6pm to Midnight, HitOldies hosts the WBLQ Time Machine, live on both HitOldies and Stereo 1230 and 103.1 FM WBLQ in Westerly, RI and at wblq.net. Your jocks are me (Steve West), Magic Matt Craig, Gary James and Steve Garren. We each have a night, except for me - I take most of the week when the rest are off.

Overnights Midnight to 6am, HitOldies proudly presents the "Overnight Blend". 6 hours of soft rock favorites from the late 70s through the 1990s.

If it's been a while since you listened, please come sample us again. We're on Online Radio Box, Radio.net, TuneIn, MyTunerRadio and at our website, https://hitoldies.net.

I'm asking for a $10 donation, or $20 a month if this becomes a real service. I have to justify the time, and the royalty payments I'm expected to pay. Today's post is the experiment. I'm not even sure the link works properly - if you pay and still cannot hear the exhibit, I'll refund your money.

Hi everyone. For over 20 years I've been editing airchecks to post on this website, by taking all the music OUT of the tapes people send in. Now, since it seems most jocks have boxes of scoped aircheck tapes from radio station skimmer machines, I'm announcing a new service. Tape restoral. I'll take your aircheck tapes, clean them up and reinsert the music back IN to those airchecks! These would make great gifts for a former jock, or it would be nice to have to just play in the car or in a home mp3 player.

Restored aircheck tapes will not be posted to airchexx at this time, however, if revenue is sufficient to pay the royalty fees, I may add a premium section to airchexx.com where visitors can go to hear unscoped full-length recordings, the way they sounded when the shows were first aired. Premium, meaning it would be a subscription service. Any interest, please comment below.

I thought it would be a good idea to add a live chat feature. Often times, people have questions about some of the airchecks we post here, and either I or Ellis Feaster are usually around to answer those questions. If we aren't here, there are people who know about the radio stations who can explain much of the behind the scenes stuff for you.

The rules are simple. NO politics or religion. Airchexx is a place of happiness and we don't need divisive political bull here. No spam. No self-promotion - as in, if you have your own internet station (like I do) or you're looking for radio work, this isn't the place for it. I will add a job board later if there's enough interest in it.

Keep it to the topic of radio and airchecks and everything will run smoothly. Mentions of amateur radio or CB are allowed, as many of us got into those hobbies after listening to broadcast radio.

See that green icon at the bottom right called, "We Are Here"? Click on that and it'll open a chat window. Enjoy.

The official description of this day according to nationaltoday.com is:

National Military Podcast Day, celebrated on October 5, has a dual purpose. The goal is to honor the stories and experiences of ex-military men and women as well as acknowledge their endurance, bravery, and survival. The healing power of talking was one of the driving forces behind the creation of this day. It aims to support veterans to share their stories and start the healing process. Podcasting is certainly the perfect way to both entertain and enlighten Americans and those listening from around the world.

My story. I enlisted in the United States Navy in 1984, six months prior to my 21st birthday. Truth be told, I very nearly became a U.S. Marine. I had scheduled both recruiters to come to my home on a Saturday morning in April. The Marine recruiter came first. I had a miserable childhood where I was bullied incessantly and the thought of being a marine meant, in my mind, nobody would ever touch me again. The uniforms, the respect... I was ready to sign, but then dad pulled me aside and said, "son, I admire your desire to join the marines and I would be very proud of you, but I don't want to lose my son in a senseless war". Dad was always wiser than I gave him credit for. He continued, "The Navy recruiter is coming in a few minutes, why don't you hear what he has to say before you make up your mind".

Long story short, I came to my senses and joined the Navy.

Not that my Naval service was a piece of cake... I had my problems with it, many of my own making, but I saw and experienced some things on active duty that no human being should ever have to experience. Thats where veterans services come in. This 'podcast day' celebration seems to have some good tools to help those who survived combat, and other service-related trauma. And trust me, except for, perhaps, a few air force guys, EVERYONE who serves one term of enlistment suffers some kind of trauma. That includes many officers as well as enlisted.

While this is Airchexx.com, a place of happiness and joy, won't you take a moment to do or say something nice to one who served in any branch of our armed forces? One cannot understand what went through, without either having served, or hearing their stories. Then, put together a podcast about the military. You may surprise yourself!
