This was the epitomy of top 40 radio in atlanta ga, to say the least I remember as does Jesse the way radio sounded in atlanta in the 1970s. It was amazing how am radio was formatted and in my own humble opinion how well it was done…As a child in the Big A, I will never forget Good old gar,and mornings just dont seem the same anymore… I did notice however this was the first year he was here, and this had to be one of his first shows, because of the way he pronounces paces ferry road, as The Paces Ferry. He was new in the town, it was so great to hear this and to the contributor Thanks , This radio station was the very reason I got into the biz myself… AM radio will live forever..
Where is Gary McKee now? I miss him on the radio. He is my favorite DJ. I want him back on the radio so I can enjoy listening to him again. Please tell him he is missed so much. Thank you. Debby
Im so happy that someone actually has great airchecks like this one. This was atlanta radio at its best. Some say that the 1960s was the best radio ever sounded SORRY, not so. This was mornings in Atlanta Ga, and it will live on forever. WQXI is the only top 40 for me…
Oh, my! Listiening to Gary McKee again brings back so many memories of my time in Atlanta. I used tio listen to him every morning on my way to work at Corporate Square. He made the morning commute so easy through all that traffic! How do people do it anymore without “good ole Gar” on QXI in the mornings?
It is no exaggeration to say that Gary McKee was to Atlanta radio in the 70s and 80s what Johnny Carson was to television during the same time. So many of the concepts introduced into his shows then are mainstays in drivetime radio today. The cast of characters, the phone calls from listeners, the big money contests — all of these were started in Atlanta anyway by McKee. He will always be one of the greats in Atlanta radio history and, like several have written here, I wish he was still making history today. He was a huge inspiration to me and a wonderful part of my childhood, teen years and even young adult life. I hope he is doing well, wherever he is today. Maybe Sirius Satellite would be a good place for him to resurface. Thanks for the memories on your aircheck, although I wish you had something from the McKee shows with Yetta Levitt and Willis the Guard. Thanks.
In answer to Debby’s question above, a friend in Atlanta told me that Gary McKee died about a year ago from cancer. I lived in Marietta from 74-88 and “Good Ole Gar” was a fixture on my car radio for years. I’ve been in Tampa for 15 years and no one here approaches Gary for humor and charisma.
That was great — thanks. Gary is my good friend and uncle. I’m happy to say that he is doing VERY well and still lives in the area. I didn’t grow up in Atlanta, but loved to hear him on the radio and visit the station when I was in town. As someone has mentioned, I don’t believe he had been in Atlanta very long when this was recorded.
Hey man, it sure was soooooo good to hear garo again!!! If he was still on the air with his sidekick Yetta(the foxy lady) I would still be listening to radio. It just about brought a grown man to tears remembering his young days cruising around with Gary and Yetta in the morning. I think he was the first to use props with his show in the way he did! He was great> I know I sure do miss his zany and craziness on the air. I never met him or Yetta but sure wish I had. I hope they are still ok and know how much they meant to me growing up in the 70’s. Just let me know when you can come back and I will be listening again.
I grew up in Alabama and listening to Gary McKee with was my inspiration in my career in radio (Q104-Gadsden, AL). I listened from 1974 to the time he left 94Q almost every day the signal was good. I have some airchecks of him on 8-track, wishing I could transfer them to CD. If there is anyway we could find out if he has airchecks he would share with us, I would be the first in line. I guess we all wish radio could be the way it used to be. (BCC Before Clear Channel)

What a thrill to hear Gary Mckee once again. He was an inspiration to me on many levels. To hear him now reminds me of how much Atlanta relied and tusted him to start their day. Bravo, Gary! In answer to above, Gary Mc Kee did not die, a year ago. His son did. It was sad, Im sure that Gary will never be the same, he spoke so highly of his children. Case and Parker, that was thier names.. Its such a shame, but to correct the following,

Gary is a longtime friend of mine. I’ve known him for over 28 years. In addition to his natural humor he is truly a fine human being and I consider myself to be fortunate to know him and his wonderful wife Anita. Live forever Garo.
Bruce – I am the contributor of the aircheck to Airchexx.com. I first heard Gary on WBSR in Pensacola while in Navy school in late 70-early 71 and recognized his talent. I had worked at QXI as an intern before entering the Navy and I called Gary while in Pensacola and joked with him about how funny it would be if he ended up at Quixie and to my surprise – It happened !! He then made Atlanta radio history. I sure hope he is getting along ok and what he’s doing.
My wife and I lived in Atlanta during the late ’70s and early ’80s. ( I was born there.)
I was honored to meet him a few times. Each night my wife and I got together and discussed what Gary had said on the radio that day. Our favorite quote has always been “Love means sleeping in the wet spot half the time.” My wife quotes him often! I have for many year tormented my children and especially my dog by literally talking to them “through a card board tube”. Would love to know where he is now.
“Waaaake up sleepy babies!!!” My high school days (74-76) always began that way. Sat in my car until the last minute at school listening to Gary! He and his cast of characters are a very happy part of my memories.
Thanks for all the entries folks…it brought back many very fond memories. I worked with Gary for the last nine years of the show on WQXI/94Q and I still smile at the mere thought of those days. I’ve considered writing a book about what life was like on the inside of that show with Gary, Yetta, Willis, Beau, Neil, Randall, et al. Someday… And to all of you who say he was the best…OH YEAH. Atlanta radio hasn’t been the same since and never will be.
Oops…before I hurt someone’s feelings, there were many other fine folks who were part of the morning show while I had the priviledge to work there that I certainy didn’t mean to leave out in my previous message: Ken, Red, Herb, Bob, Susan, Eileen, Phyliss, Laurie, Rob and the Birthday Monster. 🙂 Then there was Chuck Boozer…the super-sub who filled in quite ably for McKee during vacations and became a radio star in his own rite!

WOW – What a trip hearing this aircheck of GARY circa 1973. I worked at WQXI during that time period while attending college. I even remember that exact day of the Osmonds concert and the fun we had at the radio station. Just wish that I had made lots of tapes from the WQXI era. Absolutely one of the best Top 40 stations in America to have existed. Gary was a pro and I learned a lot! RP

for me, after growing up with gary mckee, nothing else measured up and his show became the standard for anything else that followed.
As one who listened to Gary on “Quixie in Dixie” and also worked in the TV Medium (WQXI-TV now WXIA), it was always great to hear him in the Morning on the way to work. The Raft Races were great along with Jerkey Turkey time in November and “The Birthday Monster” gotta go Pee-Pee over the parking deck! Nothing else has measured up until the 60’s on 6 XM Radio where I live as Phlash Phelps Phan Klan #451 Steve from Alpharetta!

My favorite line from Gary’s show was “Don’t come drivin’ through here like u crazy, man!” Wow, after about 30 years, that still evokes memories. Quixie so rocked!
I worked at WQXI in the early-mid 80s. Gary was one of the few on-air personalities who was down-to-earth, personable, honest, and kind-hearted. I have never met a personality who was so compassionate, considerate and genuine. Gary always took time to stop and talk with everyone. It’s ashame there aren’t more people like him. He loved and accepted everyone for who they were and never thought he was better than anyone else. He was always thinking of other people; especially, his wife, children and extend radio family. I wish he was back on the air! Gary, where ever you are, thank you for being an inspiration. You are truly missed but will never be forgotten:)

I loved Garo also, and Willis the Guard. Ya’ll got me thinking of PBR’s and Peanuts. I searched around and found a very old partial recording of it (about 2 minutes worth) I’ve kept all these years. I enjoyed hearing it again – Gary can be heard talking over it near the end about his buddy doing the singing. If anyone cares for a copy post your email addy and I’ll be happy to send it on.

Hearing the airchecks brought back a flood of wonderful memories for me. I was in Atlanta in the mid-70s, fresh out of UGA, and Gary’s morning show was one of the many wonderful things about Atlanta. I didn’t start a weekday without QXI in the morning. Does anyone remember that great promo — WQXI AM & FM, the BEST PAIR IN ATLANTA? I think every young lady in the city wanted one of those T-shirts! I’ve been a corporate gypsy for the past 30 years living (and listening) all over the country. Gary’s still my favorite jock. Best wishes to you, Gary.
I just wanted to add my appreciation for Gary. I listened to Gary on 94Q every morning while getting ready for school each morning (born in 1970, to give you an idea of when I was listening).
I always would hear him and think, “man, that’s what I want to do for a job when I grow up”. I’m pleased to say I just celebrated my 11th anniversary as the mid-day D.J. on WPBZ in West Palm Beach, Florida (I spent 2 years at WZGC in Atlanta before that).
Gary was definitely my inspiration for jumping into this business. Actually, one day before his talk show, I waited out in the parking lot of WSB (like a stalker) and waited for him to walk into the building. I approached him and told him briefly that I was headed to college and going to get into the radio business and that he had been an inspiration to me. It was just a quick handshake and some nice words of thanks from him – but for me it was really cool.
In the mid 70s my husband and I won a 3 day trip to Sea Palms Resort near Saint Simon. About 20 couples traveled with Gary and Willis the Guard on a chartered flight. After a party one night we and another couple and Gary and Willis drove down to the beach – they were so cool and real. Sure do miss his great show.
McKee, you still da man!!! Besides the best “Jock” ever, McKee is an avid lover of “Muscle” cars. I got the chance to know him personally and called him a friend. You still got the 2 GNX’s McKee? Haven’t heard from you in years but do wonder how you are doing. All the best to you!!
Gary and Willis in the mornings always made the drive from Walnut Grove to Chamblee more fun than misery. My favorite spots were the I-85/285 fishing report ( the interchange would flood after a hard rain) and Willis’s song the “Buford Triangle”. Gary was a lot of fun in person also. He did a couple of remotes for the company I worked for and he was great to work with. I hope retirement is doing well for Gary.
You mentioned that RKO General was the owner. I remember WQXI as owned by a company called Pacific & Southern. (Also WWDJ). Around 1972.
But at another time, I heard the owner was Rounsaville (also WFUN).
I listened to a 1969 aircheck and they played a spot for Davis Tires. I doubt that a station owned by RKO, which owns General Tire, would advertise for a comptitor tire company.
Maybe RKO General owned WQXI at some other time.

How come no one has mentioned the “Love Boat Getaway” cruises? I was fortunate enough to go on three of them and got to know Gary very well. I have so many great memories of those trips, and made life-long friends.
Anyone remember the MARTA Gold scam he pulled? CLASSIC.
I was a part-timer at WBSR Pensacola in 1971 and worked with Gary. Everything I’ve read here is true. He’s a great guy. Our PD was Andy Bickle and the station dominated the market. I’ve lost track of both guys. Where are they now?
I missed the 70’s Gary because I didn’t move to Atlanta until 1984, but I quickly fell in love with his show. I was definitely one of his sleepy babies. Hope he knows how many miss him and what he meant to his listeners. He got me good with one of his April Fool’s spoofs. It was great to hear his voice again.
Ironic that someone mentioned the Love Boat Getaway cruises hosted by Gary and the radio station. I went on 6 of the cruises!
Those days were unique- Gary was very popular and the promotion tied well with the TV show “The Love Boat” at that time. It would be hard to duplicate those times. I made a lot of friends as well as met my wife on one of the cruises.
LOVE this Website!! It is like a trip back in time approximately 25-30 years back when radio stations like WQXI RULED the airwaves. I heard that WQXI was actually the inspiration for the tv show “WKRP In Cincinatti (I can see that).
Wish you’d post some Red Neckerson as well as Gary McKee. I never went to school till I heard Red’s Commentaries. He was a hoot.

I have chillbumps! It’s like having my childhood (on the SOUTHSIDE!) back. The Bug that is pictured on the southsideatlantamemories blog had (only) an AM radio, and I heard these over it- Delta Dawn! Louie Louii(?). Amazing he could be so funny without being a potty mouth. Does anyone else remember the time WQXI played Sweet Home Alabama ALL DAY, over and over? Bless whomever is doing this-

I haven’t listened to the radio much at all since McKee left Atlanta. There just haven’t been any good DJs since then. McKee, Willis, and Yetta made any morning good. They were funny, not stupid.
Not only Chez Rat but Lobster Alerts! Oh, and remember Gary getting his hermetically sealed copy of “Summer of 42” out of his safe and playing it for us? Always a special treat.

Gary was the only one who could wake me up enough to make it to school after I stayed up for Bill Tush’s Three in the Morning News on TBS.
I met Gary thru Chuck Boozer. Chuckles is doing great in Charlotte. Both were great guys to be around.
I walked into a restaurant in New Orleans a few years back and on the wall was a Class Winners Trophy Paddle from the Great Chattahoochee Raft Race. The owner was from Chamblee Tucker like me. Gary was one of many things we wished we could experience again.

I so remember driving to work in the morning and once in awhile, Gary would do what Gary did best…make me laugh and I always noticed that everyone else in the commute was laughing at the same time. He was awesome. Not replaceable!

It is with great sadness that I report..it is true. Bob Carr A.K.A. Willis the Guard, Gary McKee’s sidekick on WQXI in Atlanta in the 70’s passed away yesterday after being hospitalized for 3 months with emphysema. His signature country humor will be greatly missed but thanks to this website will live on in the recordings posted.
I worked on the airstaff with Bob in 1969 at WQXI-FM.

A favorite memory was one morning when the news reader had very little to report. Afterwards, McKee says, “Slow news day, huh? We can fix that.” Then there’s the sound effects of a window opening and gunfire. “There,” says McKee, “That ought to give you something to talk about at 9 o’clock.” Nowadays, you could never get away with something like that. Too bad.
And remember the Willis the Guard songs? “Buford Triangle,” “Backin’ All the Way to Biloxi,” and “PBRs and Peanuts”… I miss him, too.

i had the pleasure of meeting gary mckee while i was working at WQXI 94.1 . it was the late 80s.i met mckee my first day of work there and i hand delivered his newspaper to him. mannnn what a thrill that was. i was fortunate to work around him and will allways miss him. i dont work in radio anymore but i would love for gary to return to radio some day.we all miss you gary.

The Tom Sullivan you are speaking of that was at WQXI 94.1 is very much alive and well…..and on TV here in Atlanta with Holly Firfer doing a weekly TV show called Atlanta and Company…..see atlantaandcompany.com. Tom gave Ryan Secrest his break in radio on STAR 94 here in Atlanta doing a weekend slot…and the rest is history.

What a flashback. Doraville, Sequoyah High ’73, I went to high school with Gary’s son, Rick. Got good concert tickets from Rick’s dad! Part of my inspiration to get into broadcast. Went to UGA, worked for NBC & Fox Owned & Operated stations for 30 years. What memories: World record STREAK ’74 at UGA, ’71 Chattahoocee Raft Race. We were the ’70’s Show…….

Gary Mckee is my absolute favorite all time disc jocky. His shows were the funniest. I’ve never heard another radio show host that even approached his skill. I used to listen to him on 94Q all the time. Those of you who listened to him will remember Willis the Guard, the Birthday Monster (friday, friday, friday!) Yetta Levitt with the news, whom he once called Letcha Loveit, and Beau Bach with sports. Remember the lobster alerts? They were talking about Tang (a drink) on one show. Mckees response was “Tang? As in Poon?”. His humor was the greatest.

The fact I can remember even that much of his poem–30 years later–attests to the supreme enjoyment I got listening to “Willis”and the “94-Q” lineup while growing up in Atlanta.
One morning while getting ready for school, I called with the name “Orphus Walcos, 80 years old” to be read by Willis prior to the singing of “Happy Birthday” by the birthday monster.
The guy answering the phone asked, “Is this a real name?”.
I laughingly assured him it was, then listened as Willis saved the name for last, paused, and said, “and Orphus Walcos is ‘gonna be 80 years old today..somebody’s grand-daddy, Gary” with a flourish.
McKee started snickering–knowing the name couldn’t possibly be real–and Willis’ next response was, “Now don’t laugh, Gary. These is peoples real names!”.
My freshman year at Mercer in Macon, my roommate and I were disappointed to realize we could not pick up 94-Q on my stereo in the dorm.
So, I climbed onto the roof of the Freshman Men’s dorm one night, erected a television antenna, and dropped a wire down to our second floor room to remedy that situation.
And Jeff, I don’t know if you’ll remember, but I’ll say “thank-you” again 31 years later for the following:
In 1978, I was working at WNEX in Macon–jocking and doing news–and, during a trip home to visit my folks in Conyers, heard you play the Eagles’ “Please Come Home For Christmas” one afternoon.
It wss the week after Thanksgiving and our station had yet to receive a copy of the song from Asylum, nor were any of the other stations in Macon playing the song.
So I plugged your afternoon broadcast into a quality cassette deck, called you during your shift, explaining my stations’ lack of a copy, then rolled tape as you most graciously hit the song with no intro, then left just enough time for the fade at the end, which allowed me to cart a clean copy of the song back at the station in Macon.
Thanks to you, WNEX “broke” the song and played it days before anyone else in the market!

It was August of 1975. I had graduated from Ridgeview High School in Atlanta three months earlier and left my high school friends and everything Atlanta behind, including by favorite radio show in the morning: Gary and Willis. I was now at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. The life of a military academy plebe was more difficult than one could imagine, especially after recently being a cocky high school senior. One of the worst parts of the day was noon mess. The upperclassmen would turn up their verbal flamethrowers to full blast. We would almost have rather starved than go to that noon meal every day. On the mess hall speakers, they piped-in whatever current hits were playing on the radio: Boz Scaggs, Zepplin, Steely Dan, and the rest. One day I was sweating to the mess hall punishment as usual, and who should come out of the speakers but good old Willis the Guard as he played his tunes on Gary’s morning show. “Gonna drive mah truk, all over thu world…” It may have been Hell in the mess hall that day, but it was Heaven in my thoughts as I sat at attention and squared my meal. I was taken back to a better time. I wonder how many other plebes from Atlanta had that same experience. If they did, I’ll bet that they remember it to this day, just as I do. Thanks fellas. You made it more bearable.

Were Red Neckerson and Willis the Guard the same person? This is too funny…the other night I had a thought about PBR and Peanuts…out of the blue…and couldn’t remember who did it. Then, my sister-in-law called to tell me Red Neckerson died and I thought, OMG…PBR and Peanuts. I loved that song; does anyone know if I can download the LP? I absolutely loved the Gary McKee show…it got me to work in a better mood many, many mornings.

Absolutely wonderful hearing Gary. I was missing him and Googled to see what he was up to. Found this recording, thank you so much for playing Gary “back in the day”. This made me so happy! He was the single best DJ in the history of Atlanta. He was with me from Middle School thru to growing up to my first baby boy. Hope to hear more with Willis and Gary and how funny they were. “wake up sleepy babies!”

I just found this website…I have thought often and laughed out loud to some of the things Gary, Yetta & Willis said and did. I would love to hear “I Want a New Truck” (done to the tune of I Want a New Drug). I also remember Gary telling the girls over the air “If you go to the beach don’t get any sand in your Slitz”. lol…Do they even make that beer anymore? They were absolutely the best. Long for the old days so much now.
That is how you do it. The great days of radio. Gary McKee was as good as it got! “Connec-tore”. Sounds like Scott Woodside was just an intern or something back then. By the time I got to Atlanta in ’77 he was doing afternoons with Barry Chase. McCartney! Miss ya man. Thank you for posting this. What great memories, oh my! McKee in the morning got me through high school and college and work, and on and on. I loved it when he would play a Christmas carol in the middle of the hottest morning of the summer! Jeff McCartney…if you read this, I just want to say hello to you, too. Loved your afternoon show. I, too, won quite a few “Oldie of the Day” contests with you. Those were great times, and I miss them.
Does anyone remember the “Turkey Drop” that WQXI did one Thanksgiving? I was told it was the brainchild of Gerald Blum. I was amazed when I saw it on WKRP. Great stuff. Also to the poster that remembered the bit about Tang. I think that was late in 1975 or 76. Gary was wondering if the astronauts also took “Poon” with them to the moon. Hilarious!
Did anyone on this blog cruise on the Carnival Jubilee Love Boat cruise in 1986? I’m trying to prove I was on this cruise and wondering if anyone has any pictures or memorabilia.

Wow, this brings so many things full circle. Delivering packages to the station and waving throught the window at you, and you waving back, live on the air. The parking dog, that ticketed me every time I delivered there, even though I had a permit. Only concerts I ever went to ,were with tickets won over the air. Knowing John was a neighbor, after all these years, poon references, I was so right back there, that when the air check ended, I was suddenly transported back to remember that, oh, that’s right: it’s not the radio. I liked the part at about 7:40 when a female caller asked him the idea of a perfect date, and he said “A millionaires nymphomaniac who owns a liquor store”. Living in West Virginia, had, I even heard of WQXI, there was no way I could have picked it up, but what little bit I heard of it at this site, told me it was a damn good station. I do know it was called “Quicksie in Dixie”.
