Harley Davidson Demo, WHYI (Y-100) Miami | 1986

100.7 Miami Ft. Lauderdale, South Florida, Y100, WHYI, CHR, Jade Alexander, Kenny Walker, 1990s, 1996

This, apparently, is an edited demo tape probably done by HD himself. How these things get into the pipeline of airchecks floating around is anyone’s guess, but this surely was good enough to get any gig he wanted!!!

This begins and ends with a Y100 jingle. In between is some really great material. Very tight 80s CHR from one of the best stations of the era. At under 5 minutes, it’s short, thus an official airchexx.com QUICKCHECK, and certainly will leave you wanting more!

Y100 endures as the longest-running pop music station in South Florida. This aircheck was during the short period where they actually used jingles; for the most part, the station was jingle-free. Harley sounds great here; the station was energetic and fast-paced. Y100 has reinvented itself successfully as music changed. It remains the dominant force today with the youth of South Florida.

The beginning of the end for Y-100. Hot 105 provided a good challenge, but by this time had already lost its “triethnic” focus pioneered by Bill Tanner and, believe it or not, WINZ-FM (I-95) in 1983-94 — until management stupidly veered away from the Black/Hispanic friendly material and focused on the Hot Rock. oops … What I-95 started and Hot 105 rocked to fame with in its earliest incarnation would be coming to fruition very soon. This is right before Y-100’s 13th birthday bash … and Power 96 made sure to sign on on August 4. WPOW rocked skyward, and Y-100 wouldn’t recover until nearly 15 years later, when it started its slow renaissance.
