Station Profile: Bill Lee, 610 KFRC San Francisco | 1983

For a description as short as this aircheck… Bill Lee is still one of America’s best jocks, the rhymes still flow from his show on WCBS-FM New York. But this is 1983 and the station is KFRC. This sounds like a station promotion tape for the sales department. It runs less than two minutes but it’s all high-energy snippets of the former 96-TIC hitman himself!

This is from late 1982 (as Bill himself tells us) and it’s just one piece of that year’s station composite (produced for sales and for award consideration).

The entire thing features all the jocks and examples of their news, public affairs, contests and promotions.

As mentioned, this piece of Bill Lee is taken from the 1982 KFRC station composite (I have the whole thing).
At the time the lineup was Dr Don / The Duke / Jack Armstrong / Mark Mckay / Bill Lee / Sue Hall & Don St John.

Actually, that’s “Your Duke” (his personalized plates even say so)…Dave Sholin, who was KFRC’s music director from 1974 to 1978, RKO’s National Music Coordinator from 1978 to 1982, middays at KFRC from 1982 to 1985 and Program Director from late 1985 until late 1986 (including the first three months of the Magic 61 nostalgia format).

And though I know you didn’t mean to suggest it, someone will misunderstand the “&”, so…Sue Hall did 10 PM to 2 AM and Don Sainte-Johnn did 2-6 AM. KFRC’s first two-person show didn’t happen until 1985.

Back to 1982, KFRC’s weekend/fill-in jocks were music director Sandy Louie, Harry Nelson, Thom O’Hair and PD Gerry Cagle did a shift or two. Cagle also had Shotgun Tom Kelly (a San Diego legend from KGB, KCBQ and B-100 now in his 14th year at KRTH, Los Angeles) do one weekend shift. Tape exists and it sounds less like an audition and more like a spur-of-the-moment idea.

Thanks for the review. If I recall correctly all of the audio production was planned, considered and produced to maintain the excellence 610 KFRC was known for. Loved every edit, sweep, stinger and sound bite.
