Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, better known as Steve & Garry, were one of Chicago’s most famous and influential radio duos. Teaming up in the late 1970s, they built their reputation on sharp wit, edgy humor, and an irreverent approach that set them apart from more traditional radio hosts of the time. Steve Dahl, known for his offbeat comedy and penchant for pushing boundaries, paired perfectly with Garry Meier, who played the more grounded, quick-reacting partner. Their chemistry made for unpredictable, hilarious, and sometimes controversial broadcasts that listeners couldn’t get enough of, on both WLUP & WLS.

They’re perhaps best remembered for moments like the infamous 1979 “Disco Demolition Night” at Comiskey Park, when Dahl’s anti-disco stunt turned into a chaotic spectacle that made national headlines. Beyond the headlines, though, their on-air partnership became a Chicago institution through the 1980s, attracting a loyal following that loved their mix of comedy, social commentary, and outrageous stunts.

The split between Steve & Garry came down to a mix of personal and professional tension that had been simmering for years. Their on-air chemistry was fantastic, but behind the scenes they often clashed over creative control and direction. Steve was the louder, more outrageous half of the duo, while Garry often felt like he was playing second fiddle. By the early 1990s, those differences started to spill over into their working relationship, and things grew increasingly strained.

In 1993, it all came to a head when Garry abruptly walked out before one of their scheduled shows at WLUP, essentially ending their partnership on the spot. Fans were stunned, but the rift was deep enough that the two went their separate ways for good. Afterward, Steve continued on with his own radio career, keeping his cult following, while Garry eventually moved into solo work as well. Despite the breakup, their time together is still remembered fondly by Chicago listeners as a golden era of radio comedy.  -Ellis
