WLS-FM 95 CHICAGO – STEVE & GARRY FIRST SHOW – February 23 1981

Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, known collectively as Steve & Garry, were one of the most iconic radio duos in American broadcasting during the late 1970s into the early 90s. Steve Dahl, a provocative and pioneering shock jock, teamed up with Garry Meier, a more grounded and sardonic counterbalance, to create a show that was irreverent, humorous, and often controversial. They rose to fame in Chicago on stations like WLUP (“The Loop”) and WLS, attracting a massive and loyal fan base with their unique chemistry, edgy humor, and willingness to push boundaries. Their show featured everything from prank calls to biting social commentary and off-the-wall stunts — most infamously the 1979 “Disco Demolition Night” at Comiskey Park, which turned into a near-riot and cemented their place in radio history.

Together, Steve & Garry redefined what talk radio could be, shifting away from traditional formats and embracing a more free-form, personality-driven style that influenced generations of broadcasters to come. Despite their on-air synergy, the duo’s relationship became strained, leading to a split in 1993. Each continued their careers independently, but their time together remains a golden era for Chicago radio.
