98.7 New York WXLO 99X

Sue O'Neal

We’ve been unintentionally holding on to this aircheck for quite a long time, several years, in fact! Sent in by Contributor Mark Yurko, Sue O’Neal is heard here holding down the late evening time slot on the old WXLO “99X-FM”.

You’ll notice that here, in the midst of the disco craze, 99X leans so far into Album Rock, it’s nearly an AOR station at this point. There’s no jingles, but lots of promos, and one produced TOH that most everyone who remembers WXLO will quickly identify.

This aircheck is heavily edited. However, this aircheck DOES provide one with a good snapshot of New York City in September of 1978. For instance, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox this date, and took a 2 1/2 game lead in the American League East. Yankee fans were overjoyed, but that lead to the Red Sox catching up and causing a one game tie-breaking game just a week later (which Boston lost)

WXLO is playing “Block Parties” – this indicates that Sept. 15th was a Friday night, heading into a Block Party Weekend – which was another AOR-type programming feature. I’m tellin’ ya, if 99X played any more Rock in the format, they’d be full blown AOR!

Enjoy this slice of 98.7, long before it became another ESPN clone, when that frequency really meant something!
