Wolfman Jack! Famous for his on air energy & gravely voice. His unique style & wolf man persona kept him on the radio, and later TV for years!

Born Robert Smith, he became a huge fan of R&B music in his teenage years, and was influenced by radio personalities Jocko Henerson, Dr Jive, & Alan Freed. He knew he wanted to be on the radio.

After attending a broadcasting school, he landed his first radio gig in Norfolk, VA, in 1960. By 1963, he landed a job at a little radio station, with a big signal. XERF, just south of the Mexican border near Del Rio, Texas. This type of station was called a “Border Blaster,“ because it broadcast with 250,000 watts. With that kind of power, it could be heard across North America.

Wolfman mad such a big splash with his antics, that it wasn’t long before he moved to another Border Blaster, XERB, which served Southern California, from Mexico. It was here that Wolfman took on the west by storm! During his time on XERB, and later on KDAY, Wolfman went from a cult figure to a mainstream entertainer in film, records, and television.

Wolfman decided to form his own distribution company and was the first radio DJ to nationally distribute his show. On this air check, You’ll hear The Wolfman Jack Radio Show on this aircheck, recorded from Oldies 94.9 KODZ Dallas, from the early 1990s. -Ellis
