In 1946, Bob Elliott was a disc jockey on Boston’s WHDH, and Ray Goulding a newscaster on the same station. They would often visit with each other while on the air. Their informal banter was so appealing that WHDH would call on them, as a team, to fill in when Red Sox baseball broadcasts were rained out. Elliott and Goulding would improvise comedy routines all afternoon, and joke around with studio musicians. Bob & Ray’s brand of humor caught on, and WHDH gave them their own weekday show in 1946. They continued on the air for over four decades on the NBC, CBS, and Mutual networks, with their subtle brand of satire & parody. Their final daily radio sires aired on WOR from 1973 to 1976. This aircheck features Bob & Ray’s final show on WOR from spring 1976. I was listening live to this show, and remember being sad, thinking that this is the end of this kind of radio. -Ellis
