Jason Garrett on 107.5 KHYT Tucson | 1996

Description by Contributor Jason Garrett…

From 1994-1996, the parody show, โ€œ70โ€™s Saturday Night with Jason Garrett; Live on the Polyester Radio Networkโ€ enjoyed strong ratings success on KVRY-Variety 104.7/Phoenix. In 1996, the station flipped formats back to its heritage KZZP calls. But it was not Garrettโ€™s last dance in the 70s format. In June 1996, Garrett was hired for the midday shift at Slone Broadcastingโ€™s (pre-Citadel) K-HIT 107.5/Tucson. The station (KHYT-FM) was new to the market with a mix of all 70s Hits from Donna Summer to 10CC. As heard in this scoped aircheck, Garrettโ€™s presentation is mellow when compared to his CHR/Hip Hop days as โ€œKid Coronaโ€ on Jamminโ€™ Z-90, KOY, and KKFR; but his conversational style became a โ€œlisten at workโ€ ratings winner in the Tucson metro. Jamie Slone was GM. Charlie Birdsell was PD. Garrett was also the stationโ€™s creative director until 1998 when he was lured back to Phoenix as production director for the new Party Station 103.9/KPTY-FM.

Just out of curiosity, how long did the all 70s format last on this station? I remember 1995 and 1996 as being the years when lots of stations flipped to an all 70s format. In most cases, the format bombed and was abandoned within a year. I remember when WMGK in Philadelphia tried this format. I listened to it almost non stop for a couple weeks, but then the novelty wore off, as I’m sure it did with most people. I don’t know what these stations could have done to make this format successful over a prolonged period of time.
