Seattle’s AM 880 KIXI, is a unique radio station. It’s an AM station, playing music, and it still shows up in the ratings. Back in the 1990s, KIXI had a Nostalgia, or Adult Standards format. For a while it carried Al Ham’s Music Of Your Life programming, but over the years it evolved. As of June 2020, it’s still considered Adult Standards, in an era when most other Adult Standard stations are long gone. To survive, it had to expand beyond the music of the 40s & 50s most Adult Standard stations used to play. You’ll hear timeless songs from Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, & Frank Sinatra, along with Oldies from the 50s & 60s from Elvis,Beatles, & Petula Clark, right beside soft sounds of the 70s from The Carpenters, Neil Diamond, & Dionne Warwick, plus contemporary artists with a swing or throwback sound, like Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Queen Latifah, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and Brian Setzer.
This KIXI Seattle aircheck features Dan Murphy hosting afternoon drive in 1996. Dan came to work at the station in 1993, and as of June 2020, he’s still there at KIXI‘s program director. -Ellis
