Don Cannon, WIFI 92 Philadelphia | 1981
In 1973, Philadelphiaโs WIFI 92 instituted a high-energy Top 40 format known as the Boogie Format with the slogan โLetโs Boogie.โ It Phillyโs first live FM Top 40 station. It performed fairly well for many years. Whenย 98.1 WCAU-FMย debuted itsย Hot Hits format in October 1981, which caused WIFIโs ratings to fall as WCAU-FM quickly grabbed most of the teen audience. In 1982, WIFI made a move to a โNew Waveโ format, branded as โI-92โ and โRock of the Eighties,โ that didnโt really help the ratings.
This aircheck features Philadelphia radio legend, Don Cannon. Cannon was known as โThe Dean of Philadelphia Radio.โ He was a voice on morning radio in Philadelphia from 1969 until he retired in 2004. The โCannon in the Morningโ show started on WIBG and has been heard on WIP, WFIL, WSNI, WOGL, as well as WIFI 92. Don Cannon could also be seen as host of โInside Golfโ Saturday nights on the Comcast Sports Network. You may remember that in the originalย Rocky movie, when the morning alarm clock goes off for Rockyโs run, it is Cannonโs voice on the radio. -Ellis
