Don Cannon, WIFI 92 Philadelphia | 1981

In 1973, Philadelphiaโ€™s WIFI 92 instituted a high-energy Top 40 format known as the Boogie Format with the slogan โ€œLetโ€™s Boogie.โ€ It Phillyโ€™s first live FM Top 40 station. It performed fairly well for many years. Whenย 98.1 WCAU-FMย debuted itsย Hot Hits format in October 1981, which caused WIFIโ€™s ratings to fall as WCAU-FM quickly grabbed most of the teen audience. In 1982, WIFI made a move to a โ€œNew Waveโ€ format, branded as โ€œI-92โ€ and โ€œRock of the Eighties,โ€ that didnโ€™t really help the ratings.

This aircheck features Philadelphia radio legend, Don Cannon. Cannon was known as โ€œThe Dean of Philadelphia Radio.โ€ He was a voice on morning radio in Philadelphia from 1969 until he retired in 2004. The โ€œCannon in the Morningโ€ show started on WIBG and has been heard on WIP, WFIL, WSNI, WOGL, as well as WIFI 92. Don Cannon could also be seen as host of โ€œInside Golfโ€ Saturday nights on the Comcast Sports Network. You may remember that in the originalย Rocky movie, when the morning alarm clock goes off for Rockyโ€™s run, it is Cannonโ€™s voice on the radio. -Ellis
