DESCRIPTION (fROM PART 1)
From the Saturday afternoon Wolfman Jack Show, EJ (Joe) Crummey is heard producing the show. This is a very interesting program. The average listener probably thinks this was 100% live with Wolfman and Crummey in the same studio. However, without knowing for sure, this SOUNDS to this broadcaster’s ear as if Wolfman was syndicated (which, he was at this point in the 1980s) and that portion was sent to WNBC along with dozens of custom station liners.

WAIT! before you listen… Our Autumn fundraiser is underway and we’d like you to consider supporting our archives. Approaching 2150 individual online pieces of radio listening pleasure, surely this is worth something to you? We’re asking for a donation of $20. If you have the means, that it. We totally understand how Covid-19 has affected so many. Here too. Please give if you can.
A few notes on Part 2. A few minutes in, Crummey mentions those working behind the scenes specifically mentioning the man who recorded this aircheck, the late WNBC engineer Gary Blau. Listen for live commercial reads that most New Yorkers will remember well. You’ll hear those well known “Crazy Eddie” commercials, and a caller from Nova Scotia gets through the request line asking for Creedence Clearwater Revival. There’s more to take note of, but we don’t want to give away ALL this airchecks secrets!
TECHNICAL
This is another in our series of AM-Stereo airchecks. WNBC used the Khan-Hazeltine AM Stereo system and while the transmitting plant itself was finely tuned and well-processed by NBC’s top-notch engineers, heard on a (then) modern, wideband AM Stereo receiver, this sounds BETTER than modern processed FM stations! Listen and I think you’ll agree that this is as close to CD or “HD” quality as an AM station could ever sound, and this even though I had to clip out nearly all the music except for where the DJ talks over the intros or endings.
Credit for this aircheck goes to (the late) Gary Blau, via Lee Chambers.
