I’m always a bit embarrassed when sharing one of my own airchecks, but I figure if I’m sharing audio of everyone else in radio, I should share a few of my own. This is Salt Lake City’s KBEE B98.7. After leaving KRPM Seattle, I hosted mornings on KBEE from 1995 to 1998, with my friend Mick Mackay. Mick was out for a while after a hospital stay, and our afternoon guy, Pat Gray, joined me on the show for a while. If the name Pat Gray sound familiar, that’s because Pat would later go on to rejoin a former colleague, Glenn Beck, on Beck’s nationally syndicated political talk show. Pat and Glenn worked together at KC101 WKCI in Connecticut & in Baltimore at B104 WBSB, during the late 80s & early 90s. After those stations, Pat moved to Salt Lake City, and joined KBEE. Pat later left Salt Lake City to go to Houston and KPRC, before finally winding up at The Blaze with Glenn Beck. Pat & I only did the morning show for a short time, but we had a blast.

my first commercial job was fill in at the old WBBF-FM Classical 92.5. the manager was Robert S. Kieve who managed KLIV in San Jose California into his 90s. Rochester radio in the ’60s was pretty much old time. 4 of the 6 am stations were middle of the road. one was block programmed Country in the morning, top 40 the rest of the day, with the religious Rosary thrown in several times a day.WBBF AM 950 was pop but featured old announcers who sold part time and really did not fit a top 40 format. the exception was the midnight to 6 guy Larry White who sounded young and contemporary. it wasn’t until the early 1970s when WHEC ditched their MOR format and went to a slick top 40 approach as WAXC, making it a 2-way race against WBBF which eventually replaced the old-timers with young guys who fit the format. they also had one of the first female DJ’s, Jessica Savitch on weekends. She went on to do NBC network TV news and sadly drowned when the car she was riding in fell into a canal.
