New York City Rock Wars, featuring WHTZ, WAPP and WPLJ | August, 1983

100.3 New York WHTZ Z100

You are talking about the nonsensical ravings of a lunatic mind…

Narrated by Contributor Matt Seinberg of Big Apple Airchecks, this long composite logs the opening days of Z100… commercial free for a whole month! Then it moves on to a few minutes of 103.5 WAPP. An album rock station with jingles and *some* hit pop music. Called “The Apple”, it had a pretty good run in the early 1980s. The final station in this mix is WPLJ. This was at the beginning of it’s CHR incarnation after dropping Album Rock entirely.

The audio quality is stunning! And that’s just the beginning. Scott Shannon’s voice sounds young and strong, unlike his Imus-like gravelly old man voice today. The energy level on Z100 is incredible. It’s no wonder it went straight to number one after signing on!

The WPLJ finish is yet another tribute to the end of a 50 odd year run in the world of Rock & Roll.
