Capital Gold 1548 London – Tony Blackburn – 1996
Capital Gold launched in 1988 after the government urged broadcasters to stop doing AM/FM sumulcasts. The station ditched the Top 40 simulcast of Capital Radio 95.8 FM, and started playing Oldies, or “gold based” records. The station continues to air songs of the 70s & 80s today as the flagship of the Gold radio network.
This aircheck features longtime Capital Gold jock, Tony Blackburn. In 1964, Tony joined pirate broadcaster Radio Caroline as a DJ. Blackburn was the first radio DJ on the then new BBC Radio 1 when it launched in 1967, and in the same year, he started a 17 year run as one of the regular hosts of the popular TV show “Top of The Pops”. -Ellis
