WHYI Y-100

Sonny Fox, WHYI Y100 Miami | July 6, 1984

Date of Recording: 07.06.1984 Station: 100.7 WHYI (Y100) Miami, Florida, USA Format: CHR Featured Air Personality: Sonny Fox Contributor: Daniel Coulombe Comments: Thanks to site friend Daniel Coulombe, here’s a GREAT, original recording he made of Sonny Fox and the morning show on Miami’s legendary Y100!. You’ll love this scoped look at a hugely entertaining and funny jock with all the elements that made morning radio fun. Unlike most of today’s morning shows which are laden with Hollywood fluff… this is so good, and Sonny Fox is just himself. Its refreshing to hear how morning shows were in the mid-80s. We miss it, and you probably do too!

Sonny Fox and the Wake Up Crew, WHYI Y-100 Miami | 1985

Here’s Y-100’s morning show featuring Sonny Fox, from the middle of the ‘decade of greed’, 1985! HitOldies jock Al Roberts recorded this noise free mono ‘check way back when. Compare with THIS aircheck we posted from 1984… Special thanks, as always, to our HitOldies friend Daniel Coulombe for this exceptional aircheck.

Tom Birch, WHYI Miami | 1975

Courtesy of Contributor Steve Bleecker, here’s yet another in our short series of Ratings king, Station Owner and fantastic jock Tom Birch! As of this writing, there’s one more aircheck of Mr. Birch on Y100 and its got all the energy you’ve come to expect! Its amazing that FM took over the Miami market so early in the 1970s, but given how these airchecks sound, one would expect FM to triumph even at that stage of the evolution of FM broadcasting! I’m not sure that there’s much I can write that either hasn’t been said, or can’t be heard from this great recording! Just listen and enjoy. Meanwhile, I’ll pull out the remaining airchecks from the tape this came from, YOU get ready to hear some fantastic radio! Aircheck #1,314 since May 2, 2002!

Tom Birch, WHYI Y-100 Miami | 1975 (Corrected)

Longtime Contributor Steve Bleecker returns with a new look into some long forgotten personalities. Included in his latest tape, is this early FM Top 40 screamer Tom Birch. This was high energy you’d find on the AM dial – and little wonder, in 1974, this is the way Top 40 really DID sound, and it was mostly on the AM side of radio! Mr. Bleecker writes: Tom Birch writes “It was great to be part of the team that made Y100 the Most Listened to station in South Florida, AND the ICON for Great Radio in the 1970’s !” ***Tom’s Most Memorable Moment” : “Awarding a listener from Homestead Air Force Base $24,999…IN CASH ! This was the FIRST winner in the “Know What’s In It and Win It” Cash Call contest !” Aircheck #1,296 s...

Jackson Armstrong, WHYI ‘Y-100’ Miami | June, 1975

Fresh “master” copy sent in courtesy of our friends at California Aircheck! It’s Your Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeder on Y-100! There’s only two guys I’ve ever heard who talk this fast – Terry ‘Motormouth’ Young on XM’s 60s on 6 channel and Jackson Armstrong. Jack was the original! Like so many people whose ships pass in the night, I had the fortunate occasion to exchange emails with Jack Armstrong in 2006. Unfortunately, he passed away in March 23, 2008 reportedly after a fall down a staircase in his home. This is a great scope of Armstrong on Y-100. He’s just as energetic as ever and man! Does Y-100 sound great here.

Harley Davidson Demo, WHYI (Y-100) Miami | 1986

This, apparently, is an edited demo tape probably done by HD himself. How these things get into the pipeline of airchecks floating around is anyone’s guess, but this surely was good enough to get any gig he wanted!!! This begins and ends with a Y100 jingle. In between is some really great material. Very tight 80s CHR from one of the best stations of the era. At under 5 minutes, it’s short, thus an official airchexx.com QUICKCHECK, and certainly will leave you wanting more!

Robert W. Walker on WHYI (Y-100) Miami | Spring 1977

“Y-100 – Where You Count – With scores of 100 dollar bills!” This one comes to us courtesy of Matt over at Big Apple Airchecks – and we’re just now getting around to posting it! Here’s a slice of Miami Heat in the form of Robert W. Walker – smokin’ up the turntables at the big Y! Y-100 is running a number of promotions simultaneously, and listen to the MUSIC! Top 40, as illustrated here, was not all current hits, back in the day it was the currents, plus the great oldies pulled from a variety (not diversity) of available genres… Rock, Pop, Soul and Country. This runs 16:43 scoped.

Kenny Walker, 100.7 WHYI Miami | December, 1997

Scoped down from a 45 minute cassette side where we even removed commercials (this is from the 90s after all), here’s just under 3 minutes of Kenny Walker on a Saturday in sunny Miami Florida. Y-100 was always a station that oozed excitement, and even in 1997, the station is hot! Somehow, the station sounds like any CHR station today, yet the difference is that there’s a LIVE JOCK in the studio on a weekend. The jingles would even fit today’s format. Its been 16 years, but it doesn’t seem all that long ago.

Jade Alexander, ‘Thursday Evening’ on WHYI “Y100” Miami | September 17, 1996

Its not often we post 1990s CHR airchecks, but this one is notable for some less than obvious reasons. First, it came in on a cassette (digital airchecking wouldn’t really become mainstream for about 10 years from this). Second, this is NOT a morning show, but a late afternoon show, transitioning into a live 7-midnight show – how often are there live NIGHT shows these days?. Scott Shannon is the imaging voice for Y100, and you’ll also note lots of commercials for area dance clubs… this IS the Ft. Lauderdale vacation spot, after all! The music mix on Y100, at least on THIS recording, is right in the center – dance, mainstream hits, even teen stuff – just who, after about 1999, ever wanted to hear Hanson – “Mmmm Bop” again? Y100 plays it ...
