Composite, WAXC Rochester | 1972

1460 WAXC Rochester NY

Our good friend Steve Bleecker does it again! Here’s an amazingly good sounding sales demo tape put together sometime in the mid-1970s by a production whiz. That this survived all these years in this good a condition is amazing in and of itself, but the real beauty is in the way the ‘announcer’ uses the lingo of the 70s around a composite aircheck of WAXC, which includes jocks Larry Black, Don Ryan, Larry White and Bob Savage.

There’s a great story behind this. Steve Bleecker describes…

produced in ’72…as the station was ready to Launch…a very BIG DEAL at the time…because…for the first time in, like “forever”…WAXC’s emergence would threaten WBBF’s complete “Top 40” dominance…there was no other…UNTIL WAXC ! The Even BIGGER story here was the ABSOUTE
GENIUS of Larry White, WAXC’s Program Director…having exited BBF…and…with “Bloodhound” Ability…Larry hunted…and recruited some of the Brightest , and (soon to be !) most SUCESSFUL Talent in the Biz ….Greaseman. (Yea, that’s right !)..Tom Birch (Birch-Scarborough Ratings, now owner of multi stations)) …Bob Savage (CKLW, and Staion Ownership) , Larry Black…Dave Mason (Walrus-San Diego), and others !

Here…please really Enjoy…and celebrate the ORIGINALS…WAXC’s very first Personality Line-up …Spreading a Little Love & Fresh Air ” over Rochester, New York !

Overall, this is an historic gem, one that we hope you’ll enjoy. Thanks once again to Steve Bleecker for passing along this wonderful slice of history!

WAXC began in 1972 as a reloaded WHEC radio, at the east avenue WHEC TV studios, until moving to the Knights of Columbus building 50 chestnut St.Former BBF station manager Larry White resigned at WBBF as PD/DJ, not because he was a lousy PD, but over disagreemen in an issue regarding BBF station operation. He and a few other BBF staff members wnet and started WAXC. most of us back in the day would agrre WAXC became a superior product to BBF. Some of the notable former WAXCer’s were newsman Rich Funke, DJ’s Dave Mason, the Greaseman, Ferdinand J Smith III and Bob Scott. Tony Brandon bought WAXC in 1978 and made it a throwback screamer”The Rochester Rocker”,,
until re call lettering it as WWWG(3WG), with the demise of AM musicradio already beginning, the format was changed from top 40 to AC to religious and ethnic paid programming where i worked there for several years as a weekend/fill in announcer and Board Op, it continued through the 1980’s…now WHIC strictly Catholic religious programming

Used to listen to WAXC all the time in the early 70s! Talking AM radio under my pillow when I was in bed! Pissed off mom and dad more than once! I was trying to remember if it was WAXC that had Dr Demento show on it? Anyone recall?
