102.1 Springfield MA WAQY Rock 102

Here’s a somewhat noisy and less than a stellar recording made some 45 miles north of Springfield, Mass... The recording unit was an 80s-vintage Sony boombox and the tape used was Maxell UR 90 minute cassette. As sometimes happens, the tape didn’t retain the bright sound it once had. Considering the amount of ‘white noise’ on this recording, it probably doesn’t matter.

I think you will notice that while the depth of Classic Rock cuts in-format is pretty good, the jock, Bob Kester, really doesn’t say much besides the call letters and live promos. Also somewhat ironic is how in one of the sweepers, the imaging voice says “This is Springfield’s At-Work Station”. Usually, the phrase “At-Work” is reserved for Adult Contemporary stations. Today, crosstown AC 94.7 WMAS uses that positioning statement. Also, many of the sweepers are promoting WAQY‘s simulcast of the Springfield fireworks display on July 4th. A few others promote the Bax and O’Brien morning show.

Overall, this aircheck is a good representation of how WAQY and the Classic Rock format as a whole sounded like in the first part of the New Millenium.
