Mark Simone, 77 WABC New York | July 21, 2007

For those who never heard this show, WABC added this program right after WCBS-FM dropped oldies in favor of the “Jack-FM” format, trying to capitalize on the tremendous heritage that WABC had as a music station. Mark Simone is a consummate professional, able to host a talk show on WABC and be very serious talking politics, and yet still be a fantastic disc jockey – he should, having worked at stations like WPIX 102 doing top 40 and WNEW Eleven Three Oh as a standards jock.  Regarding Saturday Night Oldies, it was an experiment which failed.  The show morphed into an interview program. and then was dropped. This really is a noisy aircheck. Recorded in your webmaster’s back room with all my electronics lit up, the WABC signal often faded into the high computer noise w...

Ron Sedaille, 102.9 WDRC-FM Hartford | July 21, 2007

As posted here on Airchexx, WDRC-FM’s “All Request Saturday Night” had a long run.  From its humble beginnings during the station’s Top 40 incarnation in 1984, through the mainly 50’s and 60’s format to the Classic Hits incarnation in the days just before the format change in 2014, Ron Sedaille is well known in Connecticut and did a show that’s quite reminiscent of 1960s radio. He even has his own jingles! The WDRC tribute site WDRCOBG.com says this about Ron Sedaille: A native of Bangor, Maine, Ron moved to Connecticut at the age of 1. He was hired by Frank Holler to do weekends and fill-in shifts, (and) after Frank’s departure he took over “Jukebox Saturday Night” and transformed it into “All Request Saturday Night,”...

Update: 08.29.2018

This update is just the thoughts of your friendly curator/webmaster/owner and Program Director. Wait. How many hats DO I wear? Oh yea. php coder, html writer and audio engineer. Add those in. Well… Hi gang! Update time. I’ll try to do this about once a week just to let you all know what’s going on here at airchexx. Baseball! First off, let us talk about something totally unrelated to Airchexx – unless one day I can legally post some full-length games, but with MLB having a copyright on all games called, that’s probably not going to happen. My Boston Red Sox are World Champions of Baseball once again! I can’t believe it! FOUR times since I was in Memphis Tennessee. Up till then, we fans waited and waited and waited. Several generations lived and died betw...

Curator’s Corner: Status Update and New Stuff…

It’s been quite a while since I posted what’s going on here at Airchexx, but perhaps now is the time for an update. First and foremost, Airchexx has finally broken away from our longtime host and business partner. The break was sudden and unexpected, however, it has provided the opportunity for me to do some serious upgrading, and to launch our new, fulltime internet station, Airchexx Live! . I’m in the process of finding some new features for airchexx. There will be a place for commentaries about the radio industry, a radio history pictorial (IF Clarke Ingram is up to it!), and a new, workable theme for airchexx that will be more user-friendly and more beautiful – to better highlight the beauty that was radio of the past! Our main mission is the same as it’s ...

Brian Bannon, 92.1 WLNG Sag Harbor – Part 1 | August 24, 2018

Steve West and if I’m gonna be airchecked… Lemme dig this one out of the library. Mark Denning – Top forty, News Weather and Sports on your Airchexx! Curator’s Notes: WLNG prides itself in being the first Oldies station in the nation, and it appears that it may end up being the LAST oldies station of its kind as well, if trends continue. Listen for all the great 1960s era Top 40 formatics, PAMS jingles, reverb – essentially everything left the way Paul Sidney started it. The music is certainly a nostalgic attraction on a station that really, out on the end of Long Island with the loyal local businesses and community all listening in, could NOT change formats and survive. You’ll notice the enormous number of spots that run in between every song, and every...

Sample: 107.9 WXKS-FM Medford | March 10, 2003

Please scroll down below this post for an important message “Kiss-108 plays ALL of today’s Hit Music Curator’s Notes: I’ll keep this brief since it would take longer to read than listen. Considering that the jock doesn’t mention his name, and I recorded this right after the WAAF aircheck, I think this is Matt Seigal from his “Matty in the Morning” show. There are no extra voices and it’s too short to get any of the extra reports in. It’s also likely this was recorded after 9 am and there wouldn’t have been much more in the way of morning show material anyway. It’s just too short, scoped down. This recording was actually about 25 minutes long unscoped, but after the music came out, the rest was mainly commericals. Who wants t...

On Fixing the AM Problem: What can be done?

When was the last time you asked a non radio friend about something they heard on an AM station? Chances are, if you did, you received a response such as, “I don’t listen to AM”. Such seems to be the average answer. Corporate owners know this and think the solution is to clutter the once open FM frequencies with translators rebroadcasting the myriad of talk formats populating the once community oriented and one time profitable AM stations which remain. Let’s be honest. Most of these talk programs are politically oriented, often contributing to a distasteful blend of societal angst, helping to polarize opinions one political way or another, but more importantly, helping to push listeners further away from AM as a whole. Why is this? Is talk radio actually helping or hurting AM, and what cou...

Rod West, 103.3 WEEI-FM Boston | January 15, 1983

Voluntary Subscription Options Yearly Subscription : $80.00 USD – yearlyMonthly : $10.00 USD – monthlyWeekly : $3.00 USD – weekly Curator’s Notes: Perhaps the topic for the day was the big blizzard happening on this day in 1983.  Rod West refers to it constantly.  Also noteworthy.  For those who know the jingle package and the history of this station, you’ll instantly realize the (bad) editing job on these WEEI-FM jingles.  T...

Jerry Kristafer, 88.9 WJMJ Bloomfield (Hartford) CT | June 4, 2018

Station: 88.9 WJMJ Hartford (Wikipedia) (Website) Format: Catholic Radio, Full-Service Oldies Branded: “Where Faith Meets Life” Ownership: St. Thomas Seminary Bloomfield, CT Featured Air Personality: Jerry Kristafer Contributor: Steve West Aircheck #1604 Voluntary Subscription Options Yearly Subscription : $80.00 USD – yearlyMonthly : $10.00 USD – monthlyWeekly : $3.00 USD – weekly Oh, clues views from my “Game with No Name” coming up at 8:20 Curator’s Notes: The first thing you notice about this before listening is probably, “oh great, another religious station”.  Not.  This is a unique and somewhat historic radio station in that “WJMJ claims to be the first archdiocesan-operated radio station in the United States”. (...

“Jumpin’ Jack Flash & Froggy Nights – 94.1 WOGY Froggy 94 Memphis (December 12, 2000)

Station: 94.1 WOGY Memphis (WLVS/WEZI/WODZ/WOGY/WMBZ/WSNA/WKQK/WFLP) (Wikipedia) (WFLP The Wolf Website) Format: Country Branded: “Froggy 94” Featured Air Personality: Jumpin’ Jack Flash (Steve West) (WCAT/WFGL/WFMP/WXLO/WHAI/WINQ/WEZL/KOUL/KLTG/WOGY/WGKX/WMC-FM/WCTZ/WSTC) Contributor: Steve West (see above) Total Time: 27:31 Aircheck #1,591 Coming up I’ve got the funniest doggone song… Curator’s Notes: I looked high and low for this tape and it eluded me, until one day last week while moving the furniture containing rows of neatly stacked tapes, this one literally fell out and hit me square in the face! Not quite an Isaac Newton moment but my hard head did, indeed, learn a lesson about emptying the cabinets before attempting to move (they way half a ton...

Steve West, WGKX Memphis | October 9, 2004

Date of Recording: 10.09.2004 Station: 105.9 WGKX Memphis (Branded as “Kix 106“) Owner: Cumulus Media//Memphis Radio Group Format: Contemporary Country Featured Air Personality: Steve West Contributor: Steve West Original Post Date: 10.11.2004 Curator’s Notes: The artist known as Steve West was digitally captured from a tape, recorded in Millington, Tennessee directly off the air on this particular date. Now, frankly, it’s been quite a while since I listened to this (and I’m not sure what’s on it, if I sounded good or if a dose of embarassment will follow), so let the listener judge for his or herself just what this guy sounds like on the air. Being that this was 2004, and I’d been on the station doing weekends and fill ins for about 2 1/2 years at...

An Interview with Big Frank Edwards, PD/Morning Drive on KRYS-FM K-99 Corpus Christi, TX | August 30, 2017

Date of Recording: 08.30.2017 Station: KRYS-FM Corpus Christi, Texas, USA Format: Contemporary Country Featured Air Personalities: Big Frank Edwards, Steve West Contributor: Steve West Date of Posting: 08.30.2017 Airchexx Entry: 1,503 Comments: You are probably expecting a real radio aircheck, but no, this is an off-air interview I did with KRYS K99 PD and Morning guy Big Frank Edwards. I know Frank from the days when we worked together at 103.7 KOUL back in 1997 when it was owned by Broadcasting Corporation of the Southwest and still playing Country music. This interview, which will remain online for the time being, is intended to update the world on how Corpus Christi and the greater Coastal Bend area fared and how they are recovering as of the date of this posting. Note to media: if you...
