Charlie Tuna; Chris Taylor, 93.1 KCBS-FM Los Angeles | 1993

93.1 Jack FM Los Angeles KCBS-FM Charlie Tuna Humble Harve Chris Taylor

We know it’s a Friday morning, as Charlie Tuna says, “Have a Good Weekend”, and this is Los Angeles. One of the greatest attempts to topple crosstown KRTH “K-Earth 101 is heard here, with one of KHJ’s legendary jocks holding down morning drive!

Contributor Steven Green was willing to share this golden gem from the 1990s, when Oldies meant playing the Rockabilly 1950s music in hot rotation with the Beatles and all those 60’s classics!

Now, for those of you who don’t know what this station is or where it came from, this is the old HitRadio 93 KKHR from the MID 1980s, and the very old but much loved Soft Rock KNX-FM. You COULD consider this Los Angeles’ mirror of Boston’s 103.3, which also went through the same progression of formats, (Soft Rock 103 WEEI-FM, HitRadio 103 WHTT and then Oldies 103 WODS) almost simultaneously.

The station flipped to Variety Hits “Jack-FM” around the same time WCBS-FM New York did, but never returned as Oldies or Classic Hits as in New York. It remains 93.1 Jack FM today.

About 3/4ths of the way through this, Chris Taylor takes over at 10:00 for Gary Reed.

Imaging of KCBS-FM unmistakably by Bobby Ocean.

Also remember 93 “The Arrow.” I think that was the format that followed KCBS shortly after this aircheck was recorded.

    • I believe you’re correct about that. I should edit to include that in the history. Thanks, Steven

Not sure if my last message went thru successfully. If possible could you add more or longer airchecks of Oldies 93 KCBS FM. Loved that station, the music variety, and the jingles. I listened to that station from Huntington Beach from my parent’s car radio or from the house. This station stems my love for oldies, btw love the Charlie Tuna aircheck, it was over too fast.

        Thanks, Paul

        • I’d love to, Paul, as soon as someone donates one. That’s the only aircheck from Oldies 93 KCBS-FM I had. Perhaps now, someone will see this and send another one in.

            That’d be great! Thanks!

Arrow 93.1 came in September of 1993. Around 09/5/93, somewhere around there. I remember hearing it the first day they changed format. I was like “what happened?” I called the station, the man answered as “KCBS-FM”, and told me of the new format change. At the time they billed themselves as “Arrow 93.1 – All Rock and Roll Oldies” and was formatted/advertised as an oldies station that played music from the late 60s – early 80s, but with no bubble gum or disco music. About a year or two later they changed to just a classic rock format. The KODJ/KCBS-FM oldies format never caught on with KRLA 1110 and KRTH 101.1 already (and for a long time prior) doing the oldies format.

    Hey Steve,

Thank you so much for playing a snippit of this great oldies station from my childhood! My family used to listen to this station all the time in the car and at home, great memories. I’m pretty sure Rich Fields was a disc jockey on this station as well. I love the jingles as well. If you have more of this station to share I would be so grateful. I truly miss it, and can’t find it anywhere else on the net. Thanks Steven.
