Elroy Smith was a giant figure in Chicago radio from 1992 to 2007 as operations manager and program director of urban contemporary WGCI FM 107.5 and urban adult-contemporary WVAZ FM 102.7, both owned by Clear Channel Radio. As of 2021, he is still a programming powerhouse at KBLX & Q102 KRBQ San Francisco, where he is Operations & Program Director. Before he bacame one of the most respected Urban radio programmers in the country, he was the morning guy at AM 1090 WILD Boston.
Elroy came from ZFB radio in Bermuda, to WILD in 1981. Elroy was credited as the first PD in the country to play New Edition’s debut single, “Candy Girl” in 1983 when he programmed WILD. He made big waves on this little AM daytimer. Elroy stayed at WILD until 1988 when Summit Communications hired him to program 100.3 JAMZ in Dallas.
This aircheck features Elroy hosting his morning show, with Patrick Marovitch & Kandi Eastman. Kandi later went on to work on air at legendary R&B stations Raleigh’s WQOK and WOWI Norfolk. As of 2021 Kandi is on air at KMJQ Majic 102.1 in Houston, where she has been for over 25 years. -Ellis
