National voiceover artist Jeff Davis was known as one of the prestigious WLS Jocks of the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s. But most everyone of a certain age probably remembers, anyway. His is a name which needs no introduction, being today, the voice of a number of stations around the US.
This is an original recording taking us back to the Summer of 1980. Aside from Jeff Davis’ voice, the most notable thing about this aircheck is the music. This is the format which the trade magazines called “Rock-40”. If you didn’t hear it then, or don’t know what it refers to, give a listen to this. While most AM stations by mid-1980 were either already Adult-Contemporary, or already flipped from then-modern music to some form of nostalgia, WLS went completely the other direction, taking its musical cues from the FM Album Rock stations and creating a blend of top pop hits and big AOR Rock hits. During any hour in 1980, listeners to WLS could hear Michael Jackson, Rush, Kool and the Gang, or even Led Zeppelin! The big WLS Artists at about this time were Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, REO Speedwagon and the Rolling Stones.
