Philadelphia’s Famous 56 WFIL, the Delaware Valley’s Pop Powerhouse, was the home of many broadcasting legends. Jim O’Brien, Dr Don Rose, George Michael, Jim Nettelton, Dick Heatherton, Frank Kingston Smith, & the jock featured on this aircheck, Long John Wade. Wade landed in Philly from Hartford’s WDRC in late 1966. He worked on air at 56 WFIL for almost 5 years, before doing a short run hosting PM Drive at WIBG. Between ’72 and ’74, Long John Wade did mornings on 98 WCAU-FM when the station shifted from automation to live jocks. Then John did something completely different, jumping to 1210 WCAU, where he did talk radio. After a stop at Top 40 at WIFI-92, John Wade founded the American Academy of Broadcasting in Philadelphia, where he helped others get into broadcasting. John’s brother, Don Wade, was a longtime staple in the morning at Chicago’s WLS.
