AM 640 KFI Los Angeles is a big talk station today, but there was a time the station was cranking out the hits. KFI was a little late to the Top 40 game. They flipped to Top 40 in the mid 1970s. The station had some big personalities, including Lohman and Barkley, Gary Owens, Dave Diamond, Jack Armstrong & Big Ron O’Brien. By the early 1980s, the station had shifted to an Adult Top-40 approach.

This KFI aircheck features Larry McKay, from 1981. Larry recorded this himself at KFI, on the in studio skimmer recorder, which only records when the microphone is turned on. Larry spent many years in Los Angeles radio: KHJ, 1974-75; KKDJ, 1975; KIIS, 1975-81; KFI, 1981-82; KMPC, 1982-92; KRLA, 1992-96; KFWB, 1996-97; KRTH, 1997-2008; KFWB, 1998-2000. Larry did swing shift at “K-Earth” for many years. He was also at the Oldies Channel at Westwood One. -Ellis
