Contributor Mike Hotaling (WXCR, WQBK) is featured here on the All-New Z-98.7 as Lee Michaels. Here’s a Classic Hits station that sounds very much like a 90s incarnation, but we don’t have a date to go with the tape.

This is from the Syracuse market. Upstate New York had some great radio stations over the years, many of those on the AM band Mike has a lot of memories of this market and the Albany market where he spent many years on the radio.

98.7 is licensed to Ithaca NY and today has the call letters WLZW

  1. For what it’s worth, this is not an Ithaca station (maybe you had Lite 97.3 WYXL-FM on the brain).

Rather, it is what is now Lite 98.7 WLZW/Utica. Note the reference to Sangertown Square (New Hartford), etc…

  2. Jordan is correct. It’s a Utica station, about 55 miles east of Syracuse. (Ithaca is 55 miles southwest of Syracuse.)

  3. yes this was utica 1988 I believe… 49 miles east of syracuse via the nys thruway according to the signs (the thruway curved up by rome ny which added miles) but actual distance between the two cities was more like 40 miles if flew in a strait line… the radio and tv signal overlap between the two markets was incredible though.

  4. The TV show mentioned in the aircheck, “Youthquake,” was hosted by Matt Lauer from the Today show, and ran in 1992. That might help to date the aircheck!

  5. im not good on dating airchecks… never knew matt lauer was a host of youthquake… this was pre 1990.. I had left central new york in 1989 to make a brief loop through scranton, philly and tampa… I returned to albany in ’92.
