The 1990 Broadcasting Act allowed for the launch of independent national radio stations in the United Kingdom. Richard Branson of Virgin Record bid on & won one of those licenses, and the station launched as Virgin 1215 at 12.15 pm on 30 April 1993. Richard Branson was the first voice on the station. The station was heard around the nation with different transmitters around the country. For a station playing Rock music on AM in the 1990s, it had respectable numbers. in 1998 Richard Branson sold the station to Virgin Radio Morning man, Christopher Evans. This aircheck of Virgin radio is from that era, with host Leona Graham, who worked on air at Virgin Radio UK, until the station was sold in 2008 to Times of India, and was rebranded at Absolute Radio. As of September 2019, Leona still works for Absolute Radio.
