Mike Hotaling submitted this self-airchecks, saying he just found it after all this time. One of Mike’s final shows on The Edge and it sounds really good!
Hotaliing explained that the station was sold and after the sale, The Edge fire most of the airstaff and wound up being a satellite feed. Before long the station ended up changing formats. When the staff was let go, Hotaling says, “That’s when I left radio for good, in disgust”.
Enjoy this scoped slice of 103-5/103-9 The Edge, from a time when Alternative was all grunge and the competition to this station was Classic Rocker WPYX, “Pyx 106.
It was neat to stumble upon this, Mike Hotaling was one of my favorite wqbk djs in the 90s. I remember calling him in the middle of the night to request a song, and he was the nicest guy on the phone. Not sure if he ever played it because I nodded off. (I’ve since gone to school for radio and learned that requests don’t mean shit).
Also from the station’s heyday, I miss weeknight djs Bizarro Jeff and Nic(ole) at Night. I’d love to know what they’re up to.
It’s a shame to learn that Mike became jaded after the massive layoff, but radio has made me jaded, too. Never did put that degree to use.
thanks for the kind comment dan…the edge was a great station when radio was still live an interactive…yeah that was me on the other end of the phone…I was probably recording the call to air it with your request….sometimes the song wouldnt come up in rotation right away but I always tried to put the callers voice with the song…you probably did fall asleep…LOL!!!
yeah dan that was me on the other end of the phone…the edge was still live then…was no doubt recording our conversation so that the song you requested had your voice not mine requesting it when it came up in rotation…sorry you fell asleep…loved nights and overnights as a DJ…and thank you for the kind comment above…as far as some of the other staff above you asked about dont know where jeff or nikki ended up…still keep in touch with other WQBK staffers…most out of radio.
Did you used to be a DJ at WTRY?
yes sharon its where my 25 plus year career began…i used the fake dj name lee michaels.
I remember late night radio show called Kick the PA with black metal music or crazy death metal after when Morozek or Mike the enforcer goes off the air every night in the 2000’s.
