KMVN Movin 93.9 Los Angeles – Rick Dees – January 2008

Through the 1980s & 90s, KZLA was playing Country Music for Los Angeles. It had a 26 year run playing Country, until August 17, 2006, the station flipped to Rhythmic Adult Contemporary, Movin’ 93.9. They were the 2nd Movin station in the country, after Movin 92.5 KQMV Seattle. The station hired legendary radio personality Rick Dees to host morning drive. Rick had spent 23 years hosting his popular morning show at LA’s 102.7 KIIS-FM, before they fired him in 2004. Movin 93.9 also aired Rick Dees Weekly Top 40… but because the station was Rhythmic AC, many of the Rock songs, and some of the Pop tunes, were not played on the station, so all those songs had to be edited out of the Program.

In April 2009, Emmis announced that they had entered into a local marketing agreement, or LMA with Grupo Radio Centro of Mexico City. (Emmis leased the radio station to Grupo Radio Centro) At midnight on April 15, 2009, after a brief message from then-morning host Rick Dees thanking Movin’ 93.9 listeners, explaining the reason for the change, and redirecting listeners of his show to his website rick.com, followed by “Last Dance” by Donna Summer, the station flipped to Spanish AC as “*Exitos Noventa y tres punto nueve*” with the first song of the format being from Latin American Superstar, Luis Miguel. Rick Dees later turned up on air, for a while on Movin 93.9’s main competitor, Gold-based Rhythmic AC. Hot 92.3 KHHT. Rick’s show at KHHT lasted for a year. -Ellis
