Tom Collins, Philly 15 WSNI-AM Philadelphia | 1983

In the early to mid 1980s, many AM stations were struggling to reinvent themselves as many listeners had migrated to FM. Some stations were moving towards News, Talk, or Sports. Some were trying different approaches, like big personalities, All Oldies, or even Comedy. In Philly Sunny 104 WSNI-FM, just simulcast it’s FM AC format on it’s AM 1540 daytime signal, when they decided to do something different with the AM. 56 WFIL was already doing Oldies, but WSNI hatched a plan to compete against them with a twist. In late Summer 1983, they launched “Philly 15 AM Radio.” It played ALL Beatles & Motown… NOTHING but Beatles & Motown! The format lasted for about 6 months, when management expanded the format to a more traditional oldies format as 1540  WPGR Philadelphia Gold Radio in early 1984.
