WDBO 96.5 Orlando – Format Change from News 96.5 to Exitos 96.5 – June 29 2020 For decades, WDBO Orlando has been Central Florida’s News & information leader, originally on AM 580, and then in 2011, WDBO’s programming moved to a 100,000 watt signal on 96.5 FM. It was chugging along for years with the typical News/Talk formula of a local morning show, and syndicated shows most of the rest of the day, Brian Kilmead, Dana Loesch, & Sean Hannity, and a noon & evening news block.
On June 29, Cox Radio moved WDBO from that 100kW FM signal, and moved the signal BACK to 580 AM, and to help the station have an FM presence, it was put on W297BB, an FM translator at 107.3 FM, 250 watts. That’s a far cry from the power of former 96.5 signal, and looking on Facebook, lots of the stations listeners were not happy about having their station downgraded.
And speaking of that 96.5 FM signal, it was repurposed as Exitos 96.5, playing Spanish language hits, featuring artists such as Marc Anthony, Romeo Santos and Juan Luis Guerra. This move gave Orlando it’s second Full power Spanish language FM station, after iHeart’s Rumba 100.3 WRUM. Central Florida’s Spanish speaking population has grown over the last several years, especially after over 100,000 residents of Puerto Rico relocated to Central Florida after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017. -Ellis
