20 Classic Radio Stations Composite, October 10, 1989
Here’s an interesting video I made from a composite aircheck cassette tape. Been hanging on to this for a long time. This was donated back around 2005 and comes from Big Apple Airchecks.
The following is a list of all the stations that I was able to note as I edited this for exhibition. All the station call signs appear in the clips except for Z101, K104 and Classy 100. All the stations heard on this cassette were recorded from the Buffalo, NY area and there must have been a temperature inversion or other atmospheric condition which enhanced reception on this particular day. Stations from as far away as Erie PA, Toronto Ontario, and Utica NY are heard here. Confirmation of weather-related reception is made by two things you can hear: First, the first few clips have a bit of “picket fencing” on the signal (DX-ers will know what I’m talking about). Second, about midway through, you’ll hear the old Emergency Broadcast System kick in with a marine warning for lake Erie from Pennsylvania to Western New York. That always freaked me out when an actual EBS alert happened!
Whomever the original person was who recorded this, they took an entire day just making recordings. This is a work of art and here it is, courtesy of Big Apple Airchecks!
Some of these stations are still around today in their original format. Some of them changed frequencies or were re-launched several years later, and some are just gone forever. I’d say about half the stations on this list have been gone so long that you can’t even find an image scan of the station’s logo on Google. Often, someone will upload a picture of a bumper sticker after hearing the station on this website. Hopefully, some of these stations’ logos will find their way online.
This recording is of fairly decent quality considering its age. Most of the individual station clips were of the same quality, except for one about two-thirds of the way through where it sounds like there was a bit of oxide wear in one small section. This arrived already tightly scoped down and outside of just a small amount of editing on my part, this has been left alone.
