DESCRIPTION
First off, notice the new post format. After nearly 19 years of placing audio links below the descriptions, we are now going to place all audio at the top of the page. This way, our visitors can go right to the audio.
This aircheck is part one of two cassette sides digitized and sent in by our contributor, Bob Gilmore. This includes just about every element that listeners loved about the Time Machine. The great music of the 60s, a GREAT jock (actually, THE jock who invented the Time Machine format), lots of interaction with listeners – phone bits are everywhere, and Big Jay’s “Record Pig” segment. You just have to listen to understand it.
This includes a full NBC Network Newscast at 1am. Even in 1988, there were lots of listeners during the overnight hours and Jay has so much fun with them!
TECHNICAL
There’s a bit of noise on this aircheck, probably since it was recorded in Shelton, CT. A small amount of ionospheric fading is noted, but what that is, is the skywave signal arriving a microsecond later than the groundwave signal and it cancels the two signals out for a moment. Just a bit of radio wave propagation info for those who always wondered. There’s a bit of a whine in the background at the start of this aircheck. That could be most anything, but the most likely cause is another signal in the background ever-so-slightly off-center frequency, which causes a heterodyning effect. Overall, the tape quality is good. The artifacts you hear in this aircheck are all as received over-the-air, and not from the source tape. I did not do any audio processing on this at all, because in this case, processing would have only enhanced the AM signal noise.
