Credit for this classic aircheck goes to several sources. Robyn Watts, who donated a number of East Coast Airchecks (in this case, ECA 41/San Francisco/San Jose) and California Aircheck. Somehow, there’s two ‘master’ copies floating around, and I don’t know which service was the one that got the original recording.
An all-too-short aircheck from Bill Lee, and our favorite West Coast Top 40 station, KFRC! This one’s from 1981, and Lee is at his rhymin’ best.
Welcome into the airchexx.com talkup university! Very few jocks have ever been able to talk up the intro of a record and hit the post every time – and there’s never been anyone who could make up a rhyme to just about anything and do it shotgun style over music like this guy. You rappers, you only wish you could be this good!
I met Bill when he was doing mornings at Superstation Double-K FM out of Fargo, North Dakota of all places. In 1983, the legendary Harry Nelson was PD of this three-station simulcast. I went out there on vacation that year to visit Harry and did afternoon drive for fun for a week! Bill is a world-class talent and a great guy.
Paul – got an aircheck from your week there? It’d be fun to hear.
Yeah, now that’s what I’m talkin about. Layin down a rap, fillin the gap, hearing the host slammin that post and wrapping it up with a call letter shout. This is real radio. Before deregulation and the corporate conglomerate takeovers all but destroyed the biz. Let’s put the show back in show biz. Light a torch. Storm the castle.
“Broadway” Bill Lee is now in New York City on WCBS-FM. He exits the air with “ban the bomb, kiss your mom.”
