Broadway Bill Lee, 97.1 WQHT New York | May, 1989

“You might’s well write it down, the station that’s heard all over town… Please scroll down to read an important message Curator’s Notes: The Airchexx archives are still chocked full of goodies given to us in years past! Contributor Andy Bologovsky sent this one way back when I lived in Tennessee on CD. A pretty good quality recording of “Hot 97” in its dance-oriented phase at the end of the 80s! The one thing Bill Lee is noted for most of all is being able to rhyme to nearly anything, any occasion, any artist… you name it. He ‘hits the post’ every time, too! I’ve left in the commercials and the station promos so that the listener captures the moment… the Spring of 1989. Where were you when you heard this stuff on the ...

Bill Rock, 1300 WAVZ New Haven | July, 1974

Lucky 13, supplying the boogie for Summertime ’74 Curator’s Notes: If the voice sounds familiar to you non-radio people, that’s because he’s been heard on television ads, NBC television specials and more. And yeah. He’s also a radio guy who started in the fun years of the 1970s playing records on AM radio! His radio credits include WNBC, WYNY and even WCBS-FM! Before he went to New York to launch his very successful career, he spent some time in New Haven, Connecticut at WAVZ. The station itself was very successful here in it’s prime and Rock is working the format, tweaking it, winding it around his voice and personality! What I think you’ll notice about this aircheck is how tight the format and commercial breaks were. In order for a jock to let hi...

Mike Dean, 1300 WAVZ “Lucky 13” New Haven | July, 1974

The WAVZ Summer Fun Patrol will be at the beaches and in the parks soon, all you have to do is just watch for us… Curator’s Notes: I received this on an audio CD featuring a somewhat muddy tape digitized by Contributor Andy Bologovsky. Imagine my surprise finding nearly 60 minutes of the work of Bill Rock, Brian Phoenix and this guy, Mike Dean! Simply priceless. It’s a “Solid Gold Weekend”, which means in real terms, lots of songs just 5 or more years old… imagine that today… how could a station brand that? This was posted much earlier in our site’s evolution, as part of a compilation and the audio was presented as-is – partly scoped and pretty muddy audio. In this NEW version, each jock gets featured as a separate entity (and in the pr...

Bill Beamish, 1300 WAVZ New Haven | September 6, 1965

Recording Date: 09.06.1965 Station: 1300 WAVZ New Haven Format: Top 40 Branded: “Lucky 13” Ownership: Kopps-Monahan Featured Air Personality: Bill Beamish (William R. Beamish, 01.16.1930 – 07.08.2009) (WMCA/WAVZ) Contributor: Andy Bologovsky Total Time: 11:03 …A WAVZ Flying Hit!… Curator’s (original) Notes: Back we go to a tape that Andy Bologovsky sent in back in 2008. This features Bill Beamish, a jock from the days when deejays sounded like big race track announcers. Listening to this, you’ll be struck by how important the DJ was considered a part of the station’s programming. Listen at about 4 minutes in for the WAVZ “Straight Shooter Sweepstakes”… its a station contest that sounds like a horse race, with all the ‘...

Bob Terry, 1300 WAVZ New Haven | July 5, 1967

Date of Recording: 07.05.1967 Station: 1300 WAVZ New Haven (1260 – 1947-57) Format: Top 40 Branded: “Lucky 13” Featured Air Personality: Bob Terry (WAVZ) Contributor: Andy Bologovsky Total Time: 8:05 Airchexx Entry: 1,543 …Right here where the miracles are performed… Curator’s Notes: This was donated way back in 2003, when the site was only just over a year old! Bob Terry sounds very much like Frank Terry who worked at KFRC San Francisco around the same general time frame. There’s no information available on either Bob Terry or Frank terry in any of our usual research places, so if anyone can confirm yes or no, we’d sure appreciate it. WAVZ was using PAMS jingles in 1967 and if one flipped from WABC to WAVZ during this time period, they would...

Rusty Potts, 1300 WAVZ New Haven | May 30, 1969

Date of Recording: 05.30.1969 Station: 1300 WAVZ New Haven, Connecticut, USA Owner: Kopps-Monahan Format: Top 40 Featured Air Personality: Rusty Potts (WAVZ/WLNG) Contributor: Andy Bologovsky Airchexx Entry: 1,498 Comments: Many years ago, Andy Bologovsky sent in a whole collection of WAVZ airchecks which he digitized himself and sent as an audio CD. We posted most of the CD’s contents but had omitted a couple of historically important relics. Rusty Potts is heard here in late Spring, 1969. WAVZ is airing PAMS jingles and the reverb is stunningly on par with that heard on 77 WABC New York. This is a station very much in competition with the greatest Top 40 stations across New England. Our featured jock would go on to other opportunities, including a 40 year run on Sag Harbor’s ...
