107.7 KSOL was one of San Franciscos leading R&B stations in the Bay are for many years. The station launched in 1975, when the station flipped to an urban contemporary format and took the the name “K-Soul.” KSOL became the first R&B station on the FM dial in San Francisco. Sly Stone, of Sly & The Family Ston, is said to have played a part in influencing the station to make the switch. Stone had worked on air at the original KSOL on AM in the 1960s.

KSOL was able to withstand competition from KBLX through the 1980s, But the ratings began to decline due to competition from KMEL. In an attempt to improve the ratings, KSOL was rebranded KYLD Wild 107 in 1992.

A few years later, the KSOL call letters were given another lease on life when they were put on then-co-owned 98.9, with the format switching to urban adult contemporary. The new KSOL lasted for 2 years, until 1996, when management flipped KSOL to a Regional Mexican music format. -Ellis
