WFIL 56 Philadelphia – George Michael FINAL SHOW – September 6 1974
Famous 56 WFIL, & The Pop Explosion was a radio powerhouse in Philadelphia, from 1966, into the 1970s! The station was tight, cranked out the hits, and had some of Philly’s biggest personalities, the WFIL Boss Jocks…. Jim O’Brien, JJ Jeffrey, Dick Heatherton, Dr Don Rose, Chuck Browning, Joel Denver, Dan Donovan, Long John Wade, Joe Niagra, and of course, the voice heard on this aircheck, George Michael.
King George ruled nights in Philadelphia, as he played the hits, and stayed on top of all the high school sports. You rarely heard George make a mistake on the air. He was the textbook example of flawless execution. He was probably on of the best ever at hitting a song’s post. All of this is probably what got the attention of 77 WABC New York, who hired Gorge away from WFIL in 1974, when Cousin Brucie left WABC for WNBC. This aircheck features George’s final show on WFIL. -Ellis
