It was the most anticipated radio event of the year. Don Imus, fired from CBS & MSNBC over perceived racially insensitive comments about the Rutgers Womens Basketball team, returned to the airwaves to an excited group of listeners on 77 WABC!

WABC’s corporate owners, Cumulus, said they would syndicate Imus from WABC to many of their stations nationwide, starting around the first of January 2008. The first station to sign up for the nationwide broadcast was Greater Media’s WTKK 96.9 in Boston about a week later. This particular broadcast, however, while drawing national attention, was a WABC only broadcast. Today, this remains a mainly WABC New York local show.

Love him or hate him, WABC was banking that Imus would do better than the longtime morning show of Curtis & Kuby, who moved into a new time slot. Will the audience return?
