This was donated several years ago but better late than never, as they say.
99X is captured here during a period of time where we would describe the station as ‘winding down’ as a Top 40 station. WXLO was known for screaming, high energy DJ’s for most of the period from 1974-1978, with the music going from mainly hard rock hits in the beginning to more of a disco mix toward the end. Here in 1979, the station was transitioning to a more Adult Contemporary approach, as it would end up for the next two years before finally flipping to the emerging Urban format and WRKS “98.7 Kiss-FM”. Mike Wade seems a bit more subdued than recordings of earlier jocks on 99X, and so does Bobby Messina, who is heard at the Top Hour break toward the end of this scope.

I just checked your FB page. The only station you haven’t worked for is the Sunoco in Bayonne. Nothing to add about WXLO, apart from the fact that when they dropped the X reference they were supposed to get the old WOR-FM calls back, but it never happened. I only know that because after doing afternoons, I was ass’t PD when they became Kiss. Don Kelly told me. When I left for mornings at WPIX, my replacement was Barry Mayo. Whatever happened to THAT guy…
