… the 31st of December and the 1st of January, the one time of the year when BOTH ends meet!
Al Warren is captured in this 2000 scope of pre-iHeart Media (ex Clear Channel) owned WICC. 2000 may not seem like a long time ago, but this was pre-IBOC (Ibiquity HD Radio) where the station is still operating its AM Stereo transmitter. In fact, it’s difficult, considering the conspicuous lack of locally produced music formats on Connecticut area AM stations, to comprehend WICC as a music station at all at the turn of the century.
Not being here in the market in 2000, I don’t have firsthand knowledge of the weekday format. It’s possible that, similar to it’s current programming, WICC might have been a standard News Talk station all week, then music for overnights and weekends. I simply cannot verify this. Someone out there knows. For now, it’s definitely worthwhile listening to a very personable, warm and friendly Al Warren this particular New Year’s Eve.
There’s a cool feature that Warren is having fun playing around with, called the jukebox – complete with the sound of coins dropping in a quarter slot on an old 60s jukebox. We sure wish that, like the other AM Stereo airchecks posted recently, we could have put this up unscoped, so that the listener can grasp the full nature of just how GOOD AM Stereo sounded on a genuine, C-Quam Stereo receiver. Those of you who never heard it may be totally amazed as to just how comparable to FM Stereo it is, without the headache-generating over-processing heard on some FM stations today (anyone ever hear WWYZ Country 92-5 here in Connectiucut lately? Virtually unlistenable). But I digress once again.
Many thanks to Contributor Bob Gilmore for this original recording!

This is a wonderful recording in so many ways. Thanks for posting.
“anyone ever hear WWYZ Country 92-5 here in Connectiucut lately?”
Back when I was attending college in Springfield, MA in the early 1980’s, WWYZ was an Adult Contemporary station and I listened to it often. I probably still have some cassette tapes somewhere with a few airchecks of them.
